Burlington, Vt. – Wearing little more than shimmery blue bodypaint, a PETA “Ice Queen” will hand out free nondairy ice cream in Burlington on Friday to help residents keep cool as the oppressive heat wave persists. Holding a sign proclaiming, “SNOW Better Time to Try Vegan,” the queen hopes to help Vermonters beat the heat—as well as three of our nation’s biggest killers, heart disease, cancer, and strokes, by eating more healthy vegan foods.

When:   Friday, July 19, 12 noon

Where:  Intersection of Main and Church streets, Burlington

“These yummy frozen treats will certainly help Burlington residents cool off,” says PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt. “And we hope that once they see for themselves how healthy and delicious dairy-free food can be, they’ll be inspired to embrace vegan eating and give their risk for some of the most deadly diseases the freeze.”

Most heart disease is diet-related—caused by diets high in the cholesterol and saturated fat found in meat, eggs, and dairy products. And cholesterol and saturated fat can clog the arteries that supply blood to the brain, leading to strokes. In addition, the American Cancer Society reports that one-third of all cancer deaths in the United States can be attributed to nutritional factors. Leading health experts agree that going vegan is the single best thing that we can do for ourselves and our families.
