Boston – As a bomb cyclone with the power of a hurricane rushes New England, Matt Judon is sharing an important reminder: Dogs belong inside. In a new PETA video and an accompanying 30-second ad blitz to TV stations in Boston and other cities along the East Coast, the Patriots linebacker makes a few humorous tries at the local dialect—with some nods to Dunkin’, his coach Bill Belichick, and all things Boston—before delivering a serious warning: “New England winters are no joke. They can be deadly for dogs left outside in below-freezing temperatures.”

“My dogs are part of my family, and I would never leave my family outside,” Judon continues. “So bring your dogs inside and show them the love and respect that they show you.”

Cold weather and winter storms like the impending nor’easter lead to multiple deaths, injuries, and rescues each year. (And most incidents aren’t even reported.) Dogs left outside are at risk for frostbite, exposure, and dehydration when water sources freeze. Some will die, and all of them suffer. A glimpse at just some of the dogs PETA’s fieldworkers have found suffering in the cold can be seen here. (Broadcast-quality footage is available upon request.)

Judon is part of a long list of athletes—including teammate Dont’a Hightower, former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, Tyrann Mathieu, Jarvis Landry, Devin Funchess, Chris Harris Jr., and Ronnie Stanley—who have joined forces with PETA to promote kindness to animals.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA’s blog or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?” READ MORE
