What:    Flanked by a banner proclaiming, “We Are All the Same,” and strung up between two “bloody” animal “carcasses,” a PETA supporter will “hang” from a meat hook on Friday to protest the cruel Jazz & Rib fest and remind festivalgoers that all animals, including humans, are made of flesh, bone, and blood—and that eating meat means eating the corpse of an individual who once had feelings and a unique personality.

“If people actually saw a slaughterhouse’s rows of bloody bodies impaled and dangling from meat hooks, they would lose their taste for flesh immediately,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Every animal killed for food had the same desire to live as we do, which is why PETA is calling on caring people everywhere to choose tasty vegan barbecue this summer.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that chickens, pigs, and cows feel pain and fear just as intensely as dogs, cats, and humans do. But in the meat industry, chickens’ and turkeys’ throats are slit while they’re still conscious, piglets are castrated and their tails are cut off without any painkillers, and cows are hung upside down and bled to death, often while they’re still able to feel pain.
