Wielding signs proclaiming, “Say NO to Coyote Kill,” residents of Arcadia and surrounding areas will attend the Arcadia City Council meeting at Arcadia City Council Chambers, located at 240 W. Huntington Dr., this evening at 7 p.m. to speak out against the city’s $10,000 plan to hire a contractor to trap and kill coyotes.

As PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—has pointed out to the mayor and city council in letters and protests, coyotes suffer when caught in cage traps or painful snares, which could also harm companion animals and nontarget wildlife. In addition, more coyotes will simply move in to take the place of those who have been killed, as long as food and shelter remain available to them—and research shows that even if 70 percent of a coyote population is killed off, it will return to normal levels one year later, as coyotes immediately compensate with bigger litter sizes.

“No one in Arcadia or elsewhere wants the city council to condemn coyotes and their orphaned pups to slow, agonizing deaths,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is calling for this short-sighted plan to be replaced with nonlethal and effective long-term solutions that actually work, such as habitat modification and repellants.”
