As part of its Asian American Outreach Program—and because 2019 is the Year of the Pig in the Chinese lunar calendar—PETA will provide the University of California–Berkeley’s (UC-Berkeley) Chinese Student Association with a vegan spread for its seventh annual Lunar New Year Banquet on Saturday. The provisions will include vegan sweet-and-sour pork from Long Life Vegi House as well as limited-edition Year of the Pig envelopes and a recipe for delicious meat-free dumplings.

When:    Saturday, February 2, 6 p.m.

Where:    UC-Berkeley, International House (Chevron Auditorium), 2299 Piedmont Ave. (at the intersection with Bancroft Way), Berkeley

“Guests are in for a treat with these wonderful dishes that are rich, flavorful, and free of the flesh of tormented animals,” says PETA Director of International Youth Outreach Ryan Huling. “PETA hopes to inspire kind students to celebrate the Year of the Pig by keeping pigs off their plates at this banquet and all year round.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that each person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals every year. In the meat industry, mother pigs are squeezed into narrow metal stalls barely larger than their bodies. Pigs’ tails are chopped off, their teeth are cut with pliers, and males are castrated—all without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, they’re hung upside down and bled to death, often while still conscious.
