Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding the University of Georgia’s recent violations of animal welfare regulations:

Staff at the University of Georgia (UGA) are so careless, incompetent, and callous that the school should lose its authority to experiment on animals. PETA has obtained federal records showing that the university was cited for critical violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, resulting in the deaths of multiple animals. An employee botched the insertion of a tube into the veins of seven rabbits—killing two of them. Another staffer killed a white-tailed deer who had been sedated for an experiment by administering an overdose of the reversal agent. In yet another incident, a monkey sustained a puncture to her cheek after it became caught in a metal clip that was attached to the cage—effectively tethering her to the cage by her mouth. PETA has filed a complaint with the National Institutes of Health calling on it to turn off the money spigot to the school.

UGA received nearly $82 million in taxpayer money last year—but such largesse brings with it a legal expectation that the university will comply with minimum animal welfare laws. The school must modernize its research program by leaving cruel and archaic experiments on animals behind and using only sophisticated, human-relevant research methods instead.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information on PETA’s investigative newsgathering and reporting, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
