Video: Mutilated Fish Leaps From Dinner Plate

Published by Angela Henderson.

Like a scene from a zombie movie, a fish who had been cut up, mutilated, and served for dinner shocked diners by twitching and leaping from a plate. In the video, you can hear people scream when the fish jumps, but what should really trouble them is the suffering that this animal endured when taken from the water and served as food.

Fish are far more complex than most people realize, and studies have shown that they are capable of feeling fear, pain, and stress and can experience suffering. Dr. Donald Broom, scientific adviser to the British government, has stated that anatomically, physiologically, and biologically, the nervous system in fish is virtually the same as in mammals. Fish are highly social animals who communicate, form bonds, and even grieve when others are lost.
