Have you ever bitten into a piece of chicken only to have pus shoot out because the bird had a massive, untreated infection? One TikTok user says that happened to her, and she is sharing her disgusting ordeal with the world. Morgan Godvin states, “…This chicken had a horrific infection at its joint… The birds are just like so artificially plumped that they can’t even tell there’s a giant horrifically painful debilitating abscess at this joint here, and then these chicken wings get sold to a bar in Minnesota….” Here’s the video:

Why is PETA sharing it? Because caring about animals means not looking away from the gross stuff. We must acknowledge it, talk about it, and—most importantly—do something about it.

What Caused All That Pus?

Just like humans, our fellow animals get cysts, abscesses, and tumors.

Workers breed chickens used for meat to grow unnaturally fast—so fast that their bodies can’t keep up. Their legs often collapse under their own weight, and their immune systems are so weak that they become highly susceptible to infections.

Imagine how many chickens suffer from open sores, festering wounds, untreated infections, and broken bones. This isn’t an isolated incident. When slaughterhouse workers see cysts, tumors, and other diseased flesh, they cut it off, but some are too deep to see. Those end up on supermarket shelves as a pus-filled feast.

Chickens Are Someone

Chickens are social animals who love their families, value their lives, and like to spend their days sunbathing, foraging, and exploring. On today’s farms, even those that use “organic,” “cage-free,” or other labels, these sensitive animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy warehouses, never feeling the sun or breathing fresh air.

Every animal is someone deserving of respect and a life free from exploitation. That pus-filled thigh is just one example of the suffering inflicted on the approximately 9 billion chickens killed for their flesh each year. Most suffer from the moment they hatch until the day they are violently slaughtered.

The good news is that tons of delicious pus-free vegan chicken options are available in grocery stores nationwide. You can also try one (or all) of these tasty recipes at home.
