With St. Louis recently named the “Best City to Celebrate Easter,” a giant costumed “pig” from PETA greeted lunchtime visitors to Washington University’s Food Truck Row on Good Friday with free, delicious vegan “not-ham” sandwiches and signs that read, “It’s a Good Friday to Go Vegan”—and urge people to choose a vegan holiday roast instead of a ham this Easter.
“PETA’s ‘pig’ is here to encourage diners to choose merciful meals this Easter Sunday,” says PETA Vice President of Communications Colleen O’Brien. “A hearty vegan roast is a delicious and compassionate way to celebrate the holiday while sparing sensitive pigs immense suffering.”
Pigs killed for food spend their entire lives confined to filthy warehouses. Sows are often confined to metal crates so small that they can’t even turn around, and piglets’ teeth, tails, and testicles are cut off, often without any painkillers. At slaughterhouses, pigs are hung upside down and bled to death, frequently while they’re still conscious.
Thankfully, it’s easy to keep cruelty off your plate this Easter and always. Ham-style vegan roasts from Field Roast, Tofurky, and other brands are widely available online and in grocery stores.
