Giant ‘Babies’ to Give Away Vegan Ice Cream

PETA Will Tell Passersby That Cows Make Milk for Their Calves, Not Humans

What:    Several 8-foot-tall PETA “babies” will gather outside in Detroit on Thursday to pass out free melt-in-your-mouth vegan ice cream sandwiches to passersby. Their point? That cows’ milk is for babies—their babies—and humans should choose delicious soy, almond, or oat beverages or any of the many other plant-derived beverages, ice creams, and cheeses instead.

When:    Thursday, July 26, 12 noon

Where:    At Woodward Avenue and Cadillac Square, Detroit

“Every bottle of cow’s milk represents the pain of a mother whose calves were taken away from her on a cruel dairy farm,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA encourages all kind people to ditch the dairy varieties in favor of creamy and delicious vegan beverages and cheeses.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that like humans, cows produce milk in order to nourish their own young, but on today’s dairy farms, cows are artificially inseminated (raped by syringe) and calves are torn away from their loving mothers within a day of birth, causing both extreme distress. Mother cows sometimes wail for their calves for days after separation. Male calves are often locked up in veal crates, and females are sentenced to the same miserable fate as their mothers.
