Tregembo Bear Rescue

Two bears formerly kept on display in virtually barren cages at Tregembo Animal Park in North Carolina were rescued and moved to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. The roadside zoo had been cited by the USDA after failing to provide one of the bears, Ben, with adequate veterinary care for severe facial lesions. The other, Bogey, spent much of her time pacing and chewing on the bars of her cage. Their rescue followed the settlement of the cruelty-to-animals lawsuit filed in August 2017 by two North Carolina residents—who were represented by PETA Foundation lawyers. The settlement agreement also allows the plaintiffs to challenge the roadside zoo in court if it attempts to acquire any new bears. This brought PETA’s rescue total to 65 bears in five years.
