‘Orcas Suffer at SeaWorld’ Fish Bowl Banner to Fly Over Beaches
As Abusement Park’s Death Toll Soars, PETA Takes to the Skies to Urge Everyone to Stay Away

After actor James Cromwell recently crashed a SeaWorld San Diego show to call for the park to move the orcas to coastal sanctuaries, PETA is keeping the pressure on with a massive banner proclaiming, “Orcas Suffer at SeaWorld—Don’t Go,” which will be flown over San Diego beaches tomorrow. The protest comes in the wake of SeaWorld’s latest casualty: Kasatka, the matriarch orca who was taken from the wild and sold to SeaWorld in 1978, was euthanized on Tuesday following a lung infection that a former SeaWorld trainer compared to “end stage AIDS.”
When: Saturday, August 19, 12 noon–4 p.m.
Where: The plane will fly above the San Diego County coast from Imperial Beach to Oceanside.
“The 41st orca under SeaWorld’s watch just died this very week, ticket sales keep dropping, and the company’s stock just hit an all-time record low,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman says. “PETA is calling on everyone to keep away from SeaWorld until the surviving marine mammals have been moved to sea sanctuaries.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—notes that Kasatka was the sixth marine mammal to die at SeaWorld this year alone. The abusement park’s other victims include Blackfish subject Tilikum the orca, Szenja the polar bear, a possibly inbred infant Commerson’s dolphin, an infant beluga, and the infant orca Kyara, who was Kasatka’s granddaughter.
This banner was seen this past weekend flying over beaches in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
