As the indie-rocker behind the smash-hit song “Electric Love,” BØRNS is no stranger to performing under bright lights. But as he points out in his new ad for peta2, PETA’s youth division, “I Choose to Perform—Big Cats in the Circus Do Not.”

In an accompanying peta2 video, the singer reveals how circuses and other traveling shows abuse tigers and other big cats: “They’re in these very small cages where they have to sleep and go to the bathroom,” he says. “Circuses don’t treat their ‘performers’ very well—whipping them, trying to make them terrified… so they’ll just do these ridiculous tricks.”

That’s why peta2—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—encourages everyone to attend only circuses that use willing human performers. As BØRNS says, “I have the luxury of having the choice to perform and go up on stage every night. … [B]ut animals in the circus don’t get to make that choice.”

BØRNS is part of a long list of musicians—including MisterWives, Weezer’s Scott Shriner, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, Rise Against, and many others—who’ve teamed up with peta2 to promote kindness to animals.
