Plantation Firefighters Nab PETA Award for Rescuing Cat Trapped Inside Wall

Terrified Animal Was Lodged in Parking Garage Wall for Days

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Plantation Fire Department in honor of its rescue of a cat who was lodged inside a wall in a parking garage. After concerned passersby reported loud meowing sounds coming from inside the wall on December 16, firefighters spent hours chipping away at the concrete until they could pull the cat to safety. She received a veterinary checkup and is doing well despite scrapes on her back and possible injuries to her hind legs.

“Thanks to the kind actions of some concerned citizens and a group of determined firefighters, this cat escaped what could have been a frightening, miserable death,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes this story will inspire others to take action to help animals in need.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—reminds all cat guardians that the safest place for their feline companions is indoors. Cats who roam outdoors often fall victim to cruelty or attacks by other animals, are struck by vehicles, or suffer from disease. All animal companions, including cats, should be escorted outdoors on a safe, secure harness and leash.

The Plantation Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a box of delicious vegan cookies, a letter of congratulations, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in prime firefighting shape by eating plant-based meals.
