USDA Fines Bristol-Myers Squibb

PETA filed a complaint based on information from an insider that two monkeys had died excruciatingly painful and horrific deaths in the laboratories of pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb. In one incident, a monkey was scalded to death when his cage was run through the facility’s high-temperature cage washer while he was still locked inside, and in a second incident, a monkey hanged to death when she was clipped to the front of her cage and then left unattended. In response to PETA’s complaint, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited the company for egregious violations of the Animal Welfare Act and took the additional rare step of fining the facility $2,625 for the violations.
