Retailer Cuts Ties With Marine Abusement Park After PETA Push

A box of delicious orca-shaped vegan chocolates is on its way to CouponCabin as a thank-you from PETA for its recent decision to drop SeaWorld coupons from its website. CouponCabin stopped promoting the park after learning from the group that orcas suffer physically and psychologically when they’re separated from their families and forced to perform circus-style tricks for food in tiny concrete tanks.
“By no longer promoting SeaWorld, CouponCabin is sending the message to consumers that it doesn’t support confining sensitive, intelligent animals for human amusement,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “As businesses continue to show SeaWorld the door, PETA is calling on the park to retire the orcas to seaside sanctuaries.”
CouponCabin joins Savings.com, Southwest Airlines, Mattel (which no longer makes its SeaWorld Trainer Barbie), and dozens of other companies in cutting ties with SeaWorld. Since the release of Blackfish, attendance at the parks has dropped, and the company was named one of the worst in the U.S. in a Consumerist poll.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that in ocean sanctuaries, the orcas could be rehabilitated and finally have the opportunity to swim freely and engage in natural behavior with minimal human interaction.
