Just as her band, Best Coast, was about to take off, singer-songwriter Bethany Cosentino welcomed a new addition to her family: a fluffy ginger cat she named Snacks. Snacks quickly became an integral part of her life—appearing on Best Coast’s album covers and merch, nabbing his own Twitter feed, and prompting Pitchfork to call him “the most famous feline in indie rock.” And now, Cosentino is appearing in a new ad for peta2, PETA’s youth division, to encourage her fans to find their own co-star. The ad features the indie rocker snuggling up with Snacks next to the words “Adopt. Don’t Shop.” The ad, which is available here, was shot by David Black in Los Angeles.

“The idea that I took in this cat and he now has this awesome life—that just makes me feel really good, because I know that he’s happy,” Cosentino said in an exclusive interview with peta2. “I always say adopt because it just gives you the chance to give an animal the life that [he or she] never would have had.”

Six to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters every year in the U.S., and half of them have to be euthanized simply because there aren’t enough good homes for them. Buying an animal from a pet store or breeder robs a homeless animal of his or her chance at finding a loving home.

peta2—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—joins Cosentino in stressing another important step to fighting animal homelessness: spaying and neutering. “My dad was a really big Price Is Right fan,” she says, “so every time I would see The Price Is Right and I would hear, ‘Don’t forget to spay and neuter your pets,’ that … stuck in my head and it still is a thing that I truly believe everyone should do.”

Cosentino joins a growing list of celebrities—including MisterWives, Manchester Orchestra, Steve Aoki, and many more—who’ve teamed up with peta2 to promote kindness to animals.
