The music charts are packed with hot young stars whose love for animals and concern for their health prompted them to go vegetarian or vegan—but who are the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2014? That’s what peta2, the youth division of PETA, whose motto says, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” hopes to determine with this year’s edition of its annual contest, now live at peta2.com. The nominees are more varied than ever, with indie rockers, Disney stars, punk icons, and others all up for the title. The winners—one male and one female—will be announced on August 25.

This year’s female winner could be Ariana Grande or Ellie Goulding, and the battle will be tougher than ever for the male title, with Jason Mraz, No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, Fall Out Boy’s Andy Hurley, Juanes, and two members of Blink-182—Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus—all up for the honor.

Many of these meat-free musicians went vegetarian and vegan out of concern for animals, such as Grande, who is quick to point out on Twitter that factory farms are “beyond horrifying … shocking, disgusting, and heartbreaking.” Others were inspired to improve their health—Mraz, for instance, went vegan in solidarity with a friend who changed his eating habits in order to fight diabetes. Mraz says that since he went vegan, he’s been “feeling stronger, fitter, healthier and more productive.” He adds, “It also makes me a lot better in bed. Just sayin’ ….”

Other nominees include Jared Leto and Ellen Page—whom PETA named the sexiest vegan celebrities for 2014—as well as Entertainment Tonight correspondent Rocsi Diaz, television stars Peter Dinklage and Laura Prepon, and mixed martial arts fighter Akira Corassani.

The 2014 winners will succeed last year’s champions—Zendaya and The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness—and join the ranks of previous winners Kristen Bell, Renee Olstead, Davey Havok, Gabe Saporta, Christofer Drew, and Olivia Wilde, among others.

Voting to help peta2 pick who it should name as the winners ends on August 22. Winners will be chosen by peta2 based on several factors, including vote count, and announced on August 25. For more information, please visit peta2.com.
