Please see the following statement by PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding multiple recent violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Documentation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is attached.

The violations of animal protection laws documented by federal inspectors at North Carolina State University (NCSU) are so severe that the school should lose its license to house and experiment on animals. Suffering and dead horses, unexplained and uninvestigated animal deaths, veterinary students who have improperly handled and killed animals, and the utter failure of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee to do its job and ensure that laws and regulations are being followed have led to some of the violations. The inspector found one horse with urine scalding and a foul odor, but no one took action. The horse was subsequently euthanized. Horses were housed outside without sufficient protection from the elements—a violation that the university was also cited for last year. A veterinary student improperly handled a rabbit and broke the animal’s back, but the rabbit was put back in a cage, undiagnosed. Animals shouldn’t suffer because officials at NCSU are asleep at the wheel. We urge the university to embrace PETA scientists’ Research Modernization Deal, a strategy for implementing modern scientific techniques, and stop tormenting animals.
