Matchup of the Week: ‘Bacon’

The past couple of weeks, I’ve been craving a vegan breakfast sandwich, and I think I’m finally going to make some next weekend! à Get excited. Why, you ask? Because this means I’ve been thinking about the ingredients I’m going to use, and I’ve got good news: Although “real” bacon is one of the worst things you can eat, the vegan version is definitely easier on your heart and your overall health.

With less fat, sodium, and cholesterol as well as fewer calories and the same bacon-y taste, there’s really no comparison. The vegan version is the clear winner. I know what I’m having at brunch next Sunday. Vegan-bacon-and-tofu-egg sandwiches, here I come!

    Since I am a new vegetarian (really working hard on it) I still have some problems staying away from cheese, usually sharp cheddar, and once in a great while a BLT Sandwich. Otherwise I don’t miss much of the other awful foods I used to eat. I broke down a few weeks ago and made a BLT, it tasted good, but, I was so physically sick all evening, I don’t think I will do that again. And then the guilt was even worse LOL, so I guess I am really getting where I need to be. Now the cheddar cheese, I don’t eat very much, but still it seems to show up in my refrigerator now and again. I am really trying to get rid of all sugars, also, still fighting that one, so bacon, cheddar cheese and any sort of sugar, still not so bad considering I gave up everything else, but I still get really guilty feelings when I eat these things. LOL. Vicki.

    @Belly I always liked the smell of play dough. It made me always want to eat it.

    The only trouble with coconut is that darn saturated fat that turns to cholesterol in the body, so take it easy on the coconut!

    Ok, so back when I was a meat eater I used to love turkey bacon. Since I’ve stopped carnivoring, I’ve yet to discover a fake bacon that has a really good flavor AND texture. I’m not too fond of that Smart Bacon. It’s like Beggin’ Strips for dogs. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    @Kyle It makes converting recipes for tradtional meals that originally had meat in them much easier. Also, I became a Vegetarian not because I dislike the taste of meat, but because I disagree with the way the animals are treated and in turn the health of the meat I would consume.

    @Barb M. I think you’re forgetting that real bacon cooks down much more. You basically just heat-up the Facon. After the real bacon is cooked they are probably about the same weight.

    You know all the talk of cream cheese just makes me think of coconut milk and all of the great things you can do with it including replacing soy. I don’t know about you guys, but soy milk always tasted like play dough smells to me! Coconut ice cream is great too. Mum coconut… I LOVE it!

    @whiteboots i have made many vegan cheesecakes, vegan cream cheese works just fine!(i usually use soy ice cream too, to increese flavor/sweetness.)

    Can the vegan cream cheese that comes in a tub but used to make cheesecake. I love to serve cheesecake but since my husband and I became vegans over a year ago, I haven’t made any. I didn’t know if the vegan cream cheese in a tub would work. Do you have any vegan cheesecake recipes?

    Does anyone else feel that eating “fake” meat is counter-productive? Didn’t we become vegetarians and vegans so we could eat foods that aren’t meat? Why keep the meat-eating delusion alive by eating fake meat?

    This comparison would be more useful if you equalized the portions. The bacon is still way worse, but as it stands now, comparing 10g of veg “bacon” vs. 15g of dead pig bacon isn’t totally legit.
