“When I realized that hamburgers didn’t really grow in ‘hamburger patches,’ as the famous McDonald’s ads had kids believe, but instead came from cows who screamed as they were electrically prodded to slaughter, I became a vegetarian and soon started rolling nickels I’d saved to join PETA,” says Anderson of her early wake-up call to help protect animals.
Some people go vegetarian after looking an animal in the eyes and realizing that there’s a “who,” not a “what,” looking back. Some pitch out animal products to ditch unwanted pounds or because they want to tread more lightly on the Earth.
