‘We’d Like to Thank the Academy …’

Bleary-eyed and barely out of bed, I woke up to this morning’s Oscar nominations delightfully unsurprised. Every year, the nominees for the Best Documentary Academy Award manage to reflect concerns that stir Americans most, so I wasn’t shocked to see that two of this year’s five nominated films are The Cove—the critically acclaimed examination of Japan’s bloody dolphin trade and slaughter—and Food Inc., the eye-opening examination of the nation’s grossly inhumane and environmentally unsustainable production of meat.

Alec Baldwin—who, coincidentally, narrated PETA’s iconic documentary, “Meet Your Meat“—is hosting this year’s award show, so on March 7, I’m going to be sitting on my couch, waiting for him to give a gold statue to The Cove or Food Inc. with his best Jack Donaghy swagger. I’ll be happy if either movie wins, although I am partial to The Cove. How about you? Which do you think will take home the gold?

I’m currently watching Food Inc. in my psychology class right now. It’s disgusting.. If it gets any worse I’m going to have to leave.. I already know what goes on in slaughter houses there doesn’t need to be another video of it.

Mike your comments are how I feel about these two documentaries. I just felt something is missing from them and hope that one of the other nominees and yes none are Moore’s win. Doesn’t mean that they won’t win there’s a good chance based on the fact Moore has indeed won over some really good documentaries before but I just am not sure about these two.

Jade After watching Sicko it’s obvious that Michael Moore knows very little about the Canadian health care system. He’s not above a little hyperbole to help sell a flick.

  • Jessie says:

I think that “FOOD INC.” will win because it is a subject that has more coverage in the average livingroom or dining room than the dolphin slaughter. I wish they were both even there but most people have or WILL have a discussion about the pros and cons of meat eating even children! A lot of people aren’t aware or don’t even CARE about what goes on with the dolphins! This world can be very narrow minded. My bid would be “THE COVE”.

I need to watch these films if they win it will be historic!

Aleksandra the reason I posted wanting Moore to win is that I felt his documentaries in the past have been better than the two that are nominated that are animal related. There is something about both of these that just doesn’t ring true to me in regard to facts. Then again all the documentaries lately haven’t been wellmade IMHO. The last one I liked that actually taught the dangers of food grease and its impact on health was “Supersize Me” simply because he proved his facts and early too because he was actually told by a doctor to STOP that challenge.

I haven’t seen Food Inc. but The Cove was amazing! Jack Donaghy ahhhhh. What a man Alec Baldwin is

  • NT says:

I have a feeling that Food Inc. will win after Oprah devoted a whole show to it. Either one winning an Oscar would be a great validation to the animal rights movement.

  • Aleksandra says:

Yey! This is very exciting! just one question to someone who posted above… Micheal Moore? What??!!! What does he have to do with any of this lol

  • Brien Comerford says:

The Cove and Food Inc. should be imperative documentaries to view for people of all ages.

  • viviana says:

what matters is that nominees are 2 movies that talk about current issues as is the suffering and slaughter of dolphins and which serves to raise awareness that people and governments around the world to implement legislation that does not happen! ! and live for nominations ..

  • Ralph says:

I think neither will honestly I thought The Most Dangerous Man in America Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers was a very well thought out documentary as well. The others also will make it tough to win.

  • Jade says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but go Michael Moore at least your documentaries have some facts to them.

  • carla says:

The Cove!!!! This makes me cry EVERY time and it must be stopped for GOOD!!!!!!!
