A Vegan Walks Into a McDonald’s Meeting …

Written by Michelle Kretzer | May 24, 2012

Here’s something that you might not know about PETA: We hold stock in companies whose policies we’re trying to change so that we can attend annual meetings and propose shareholder resolutions to try to push companies to stop cruel practices. McDonald’s had one such meeting today, so, of course, we were there with bells on.

PETA campaigner Tracy Patton stood up and asked McDonald’s executives why they continue to allow their suppliers to use an archaic slaughter method that includes slicing chickens’ throats while they’re still conscious and scalding them to death in defeathering tanks. She explained to the group of shareholders that an improved slaughter method called “controlled-atmosphere killing” (CAK) would eliminate the worst abuses of chickens and is already used by McDonald’s suppliers in Europe and by other companies in the U.S.

The McDonald’s execs hemmed and hawed and made excuses, but they and the shareholders got the message that PETA isn’t going to let McDonald’s cruel slaughter of hundreds of millions of chickens each year be swept under the rug.

Make sure that McDonald’s gets the message from you, too. E-mail President Don Thompson, and demand that the chain switch to CAK.

I haven’t eaten animals for almost 8 years now but that doesn’t mean I live in a dream world. You’re looking at the end of humanity before the whole world (especially America) goes vegetarian/vegan. As animal rights advocates we should support LESS cruel practices of (mass) killing rather than wait for everyone to magically wake up with compassion as their priority! If it’s in our power to relieve billions of animals from even the smallest degree of pain/fear/torture, then we should do so. I think I’d rather be put to sleep than ground alive/beaten/sliced & diced to death. We are still fighting for the minimum change but it’s worth it!

P.S. F**K YOU, MCDONALDS & ALL OTHER CHAINS WHO DON’T EVEN HAVE ONE DECENT OPTION FOR PEOPLE WHO WON’T/CAN’T EAT MEAT/DAIRY. I GUESS YOU CAN’T SEE PAST THE BILLION$.

its disgraceful why cant mcdonalds make a quorn or tofu version of their chicken products i have been a vegitarian all my life now converting to a vegan so why cant some fat mcdonald consumer just swap instead of supporting animal abusers !!!

  • Corinne says:

There is NO “improved slaughter method”!!! That is NOT a solution, the only solution is to STOP THE KILLING. To demand less is useless and does not help the animals.

I was at work yesterday and recently became a vegetarian and am trying to be vegan all of the girls yesterday were eating McDonald’s they came in with a huge bag of it i was sitting there and I had brought my lunch from home and literally had to leave because I was so disgusted by what they were doing and when I told them a couple of them cared and a couple of them did not I was devastated I have a hard time functioning in such a cruel society.

I’ve always been an animal lover, even though I do eat meat. I’ve NEVER eaten at McDonalds and never plan to. I almost puked watching the videos of the chickens being slaughtered, because I have to chickens who are my pets and I would never kill in a million years. I’ll get back to you when I stop shivering.

I am in complete disgust when I see a bloated fat person in line at a McDonald’s getting ready to gobble down the remains of a tourted animal ! Wake up America you are the fattest country in the world , go vegetarian or vegan and maybe one morning you will wake up and be able to see your feet over your fat stomach ! You all should be ashamed of yourselves

  • Yodelgirl says:

  • Harry Morgan says:

I am extremely disgusted to know that they are slaughtering chickens this way. I still eat meat but I won’t eat nuggets at McDonalds anymore until they change their slaughtering ways.

  • Austin says:

I am only 13 years old but I can clearly see how wrong this is. Let’s all take a stand! I’m showing all of my friends these cruelty videos.

  • Nicole says:

I used to eat meat my whole life, and chicken had always been my favorite, but reading how they kill the poor helpless animals is so heart breaking.. i am taking a stand and not eating meat anymore

  • kate white says:

it does seem pretty extreme to have to give them money and invest but it does give you access. and I am Vegan not vegetarian

  • Mimi says:

At first I was like what the hell….then it made sense, you are right you have to sacrifice a little to gain allot. Owning the stock to get into those meetings will pay off eventually. Mcdonalds is suffering sales are down not just because of vegetarians but also a boycott due to cruelty….
