No-Nonsense Message From Bea-yond the Grave

Written by PETA | April 21, 2010

Honorary PETA director Bea Arthur had no intention of letting a little thing like, say, death stop her from speaking out against cruelty to animals. The Golden Girl is taking on the Golden Arches’ chicken abuse in a full-page PETA ad in Thursday’s Chicago Tribune—paid for by Bea herself through a gift in her will.

Bea Arthur Ad

PETA members dressed in black will also hold a spirited protest outside a downtown Chicago McDonald’s to mark the ad’s debut and the one-year anniversary of beautiful Bea’s passing.

Will Bea’s plea from beyond the grave inspire McDonald’s to lessen the hellish suffering of the chickens who are killed for its restaurants? Please join Bea and PETA by taking action and urging McDonald’s to demand that its suppliers switch to a less cruel slaughter method called controlled-atmosphere killing. If Bea’s eternal activism has inspired you, please also consider joining PETA’s Augustus Club (which Bea helped launch) to ensure that your efforts to help animals live on long after you’ve gone!

Maybe someone from PETA can verify this for me but it’s my understanding that PETA contacted the cast of GG after the mink episode ran and this is what got the girls involved with PETA in the first place. GG then went on to have an episode where they try to save the dolphins and they get arrested at a protest! Love Bea…what an angel!

  • Gina says:

Awwwwww Bea I love you so much! It’s been almost a year since you left this world. However you will be loved and missed always!

I own all the 7 seasons and there IS an episode where they grow and try to breed minks. They specifically have a conversation in which Dorothy mentions how she’s surprised that Rose is OK with breeding mink since they will be killed for their fur. And Rose says “do they have to be killed?” And Sophia says “no Rose people want coats that urinate!” or something like that. In the end they find out that the minks are too old to breed and keep them supposedly. Anyhow this episode has always surprised me because I’ve known about the animal rights activism of Betty White. But still any time anything is done to reduce the suffering of innocent animals I’ll support 100.

  • Courtney says:

Jill I saw this episode too. I didn’t hear the part about the fur but I didn’t see it from end to end but I thought that them having minks was weird. They did however keep the minks and as Rose put it “they made us happy so now its time for them to retire and us make them happy” so it is assumed they kept them as pets. Bea Arthur rocks. period.

  • Jill says:

I’ve seen all the golden girls episodes and this is not one of them. I dont’ know why you are telling such a tale but Bea has always been an animals rights person for as long as I remember. I can’t imagine that the Golden Girls would do such an episode I’ve seen all of them and never did it include that nor would Bea Arthur agree to it.

  • Mike Quinoa says:

How can you not love that woman? And what in hell a fitting place for them is wrong with McDonald’s? If KFC Canada can adopt controlled atmosphere killing why are McD’s so far behind the times?

  • Aneliese says:

I’m glad Bea Arthur approved of this before her death I’m sure a lot of people are not going to think that when they see this.

  • John Carmody says:

Everyone loved Bea she was amazing. Long before i got involved in animal rights i remember watching the Golden Girls with my mam and seeing her drinking from a PETA cup which was great this was in the 90’s! May god wrap his loving arms around this saint for animals!

that’s interesting because i am an avid golden girl watcher and one of the episodes they are breeding mink…she tells rose that she didn’t think rose would be interested in breeding the mink because one day they would have to be killed for their fur…so i am surprised that she agreed to that episode OR about this ad…weird…GLAD about itmaybe she became veggie after GG??? that episode always irks me so much…
