Got Rabbit Milk?

Think back to 1998, when Titanic spoofs were still topical and The Simpsons was only in its 10th season. Remember the Simpsons episode in which Homer discovers that Springfield’s milk is supplied by a mafia-run underground rat-milking operation? Yeah, it was pretty nasty.

Fast-forward to 2009: Pharming, a Netherlands-based biotech firm, seems to be using The Simpsons as misguided inspiration for pharmaceutical development. Pharming has been running its own rabbit-milking operation for years. And now, with the recent announcement that Pharming has extracted a protein from rabbit milk for use in an experimental drug, Dutch farmers are prepared to start milking rabbits on a large scale.

This news may seem like it’s from an alternate cartoon universe, but animal-exploiting companies like Pharming are constantly finding new ways to abuse female animals and their reproductive systems, sentencing millions of animals to confinement, misery, and death in the process. These profit-hungry businesses are willing to do anything to animals for money—no matter how much suffering it causes. Many people know that dairy farms forcibly impregnate cows over and over and rip their babies from them a day after they’re born so that humans can drink their mothers’ milk and the male calves can be sold for veal. Less attention is paid to the biotech companies that milk mice in order to extract a protein for human baby formula or genetically engineer goats to produce spider silk in their milk for use in parachute cords and bulletproof vests.

The easiest, fastest way to save lives is simply not to support companies that profit from cruelty to animals. Go vegan and shun any products that were tested on animals or that contain any animal ingredients. Remember that there is always a humane alternative.

Gosh…how imaginative can those people be! Bunnies are such small animals… for milking? incrediblemust be kidding me. Don’t we human have more than enough supply of dairy? those liars always try to fool people by the socalled ” scientific approachs”. To methey are biologically nonsence!

  • chelsea says:

This is just disgusting. personally am not a vegan but would be if I wasn’t horrible and love meat. It tastes good but I do feel guilty. anyways this is just wrong! bunnys are cute intellegent friendly creatures and we’re tourturing them like this for our benefit. When is the day gonna come where we’re tested for the animals benefit?

I wonder if you’ve heard of the movie Daybreakers. The story is a plague turned the majority of people into vampires and the humans have become secondclass minorities. The vampires are told to capture any human they see and turn them in so they can be farmed for their blood. I’d think this would be a great analogy for what’s happening with animals being milked.

  • Janet says:

Disgusting…The annoucement from NG states that they can derive the same substance from human donor blood except that they have to test for blood viruses. So basically it comes down to time COST. Corporations will go to any length to make MONEY!!! Jesus said that the love of money was the root of all evil.

  • Peter says:

Whooohooo…. you gotta be kidding me. Abuse and exploting? Please look at those companies that use animals for making medicin and see if they have a GMPstatus and why no try to contact those companies yourself before you accuse them of abuse and exploits… This is hilarious!

  • Kalama Halamezad says:

Ewwww…guys they’re not milking the rabbits for us to drink. They’re using them as bioreactors to produce therapeutic proteins that can’t be synthesized artificially. I’d have to say this fate is probably preferable to being a bioreactor for antibody production though.

I served “Purely Decadent” vanilla soy ice cream on my vegan gluten and sugar free apple crisp today and nobody could believe it was not “real” ice cream. If I hadn’t mentioned what it was nobody would have even commented at all except to say that it was delicious! YUM!

  • Lisa says:

Man! That’s just nasty! As if the rabbits don’t have to go through enough torment between experiemnts science class labs the fur industry…now milk?? When will this end?!?!?! As a person of Dutch origin I am even more disappointed in “my people”. Is PETA doing anything in their action centre?

  • Brien Comerford says:

Who are we to treat our fellow creatures in such a torturous manner. The human race overwhelmingly sucks ! It’s inarguable that we’re the most pernicious species on earth. The fall of man was a True story !

  • Rad_Rosa89 says:

Ugh this is so nasty!! If they must do their testing on female animals why not do the testing on female humans huh?! Then they could drink the milk from female humans and keep impregnating them and stop picking on animals for their dirty bloody work!!

  • AlexK says:

I agree with Olivia. I like soy and almond milk way better than dairy milk haven’t tried hemp or rice milk yet and for the holidays I found something AMAZING it is peppermint chocolate soy milk! Hot or cold it’s simply awesome. And they also have a SoyNog which is also addictive. I’ve also seen some soy cream but I haven’t tried it yet. Try Tofutti Better Pecan you won’t be able to tell that it has NO dairy. Best ice cream I have ever had. Try Tofutti sour cream or cream cheese it’s perfect and again NO dairy. NOBODY should have to suffer and then die for any of this especially when there are great alternatives!

The first I heard about goats being genetically engineered to produce spider silk was on an episode of CSI. It’s a shame such bizarre methods are as much a part of real life as the rapes and murders featured in fictional programmes.

  • Carla* says:

Wow!! When will we ever draw the line. The use and abuse of animals on this planet is just sickening!!

  • Olivia says:

Ohhh ICK! I am convinced that if people would just TRY soyhempalmond or rice milkice creamcheeses they will realise that ‘wow this tastes amazing’ and we will never have to torture animals again I just recently bought “rice nogg” for the holidays TIP TO EVERYONE print out peta flyers about the horrors of the milking industry and have soyricealmond milk taste testers!

  • Chris says:

It’s so sad to hear that rabbits are exploited so much for various reasons. As a rabbit owner and friend to many rabbits at Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary in Michigan one must experience the true intelligence and personalities of rabbits before abusing them not to lessen the harsh treatment of ALL other animals on our planet by humans.

  • Vic says:

Rat milk is bad but rabbit milk is worse. I’m glad I drink soymilk instead. Milking animals for profit is just plain gross and unhumane long story short.
