Animals Skinned Alive for Faux ‘UGGs’

Written by PETA | October 6, 2011

Just when you thought that footwear involving the mutilation of millions of sheep couldn’t get any ugglier, several makers of knock-off UGG-style boots have been found to use fur from animals who were beaten and skinned alive. Tests conducted on products labeled as “Australian sheepskin” found that they were actually made of raccoon dog fur, most likely from animals confined to barbaric Chinese fur farms.

Raccoon dogs are confined to row upon row of tiny wire cages that are exposed to the elements. Many of the animals go insane from the intensive confinement. Undercover video footage shows raccoon dogs as they are dragged from cages and slammed repeatedly to the ground before being skinned while still conscious. Some survive for as long as 10 minutes, blinking in pain on a pile of other bodies.

The tests also found that some boots contained domestic dog fur, which made it into Australia despite the country’s ban on dog and cat fur.

Since you never can be sure whose fur ends up on your boots, coat, or gloves, the best thing to do is avoid all fur.

  • Paul says:

I always pray to God every night that all good people and all animals are able to stay out of harmful and dangerous situations and that no harm is done to any of them. I watched this video and I have heard of and have physically seen cruel things and behavior in my life and I’m barely an adult but this is seriously one of the most down right disgusting, horrible, atrocious, and terrible things that are going on in this world I almost can’t believe how this just happens. I hope that one day the whole entire world can wake up and take a big stand for all cruelty for animals and humans too but especially animals after seeing this video it is horrendous and disgusting. The people who skin these animals will burn in hell.

  • andri says:

  • Carianne says:

I am doing a powerpoint for my school on animal cruelty, and animal rights, and was wandering if I could share this video by putting it on my powerpoint?

  • Marlo says:

I thought uggs were made out out sheep skin. This video has me in tears. How can we stop this. I still believe uggs are made from sheep skin. However this animal cruelty needs to stop!!!

  • Christine Trewartha says:

I watched a video the other night that had been on facebook. I thought I was going to pass out. I could not believe what I was watching. A live dog being skinned alive. It was hanging upside down, tied up by the feet and the bloke pulled its skin off like taking a jumper off. I have felt sick for 2 days. I can’t stop thinking about it. Surely a pair of boots isn’t worth this. How do we spread the word? And what else do the use it for. I can’t get my head around it. I hate it.

  • Ashl says:

I have hated uggs and hate them more now that I know that they are made of real fur my friends uggs molded! What some people do to earn money is ridiculous and to think there are people who buy them for $200!

  • boobop says:

Omg I cant watch things being hurt

  • C.A. says:

This is so sad and horrendous…I don’t understand the heartlessness of people against animals. This made my heart sink…

  • Chatterbox says:

There are no words in the human language or dictionary to describe the atrocity and brutality of what these people are constantly doing. What is worse if celebrities endorse and flaunt fur purely for the desire to flaunt apparent wealth or appear wealthy. They deserve to be skinned alive! Why do people think that they have the god given divine right to skin animals alive and subject them to such heinous conditions just to wear their skin because they’re so uncomfortable and invalid in their own flesh! I cannot believe this is allowed to happen!

  • Marina Parks says:

I don’t think I have ever seen anything more brutal than this. I sat here sobbing for a good 20 minutes after watching this. I am truly disgusted by the acts of these senseless people. Don’t they realize how horrible they look doing this to a poor little creature? I could go on and on…. This needs to be stopped sooner than later because it is barbaric and awful

  • I watched this when it was on television a few years ago & still can’t shake the horrific images from my head to this day. It is truly barbaric & I cannot understand how anyone could do this to a living creature. Vile

  • Ugg owner says:

I got a pair of “Uggs” for Chrsitmas and poor animals being killed for some overpriced boots.. My mom told me an animal had to die for my boots. I am very against this! Idk what I do with my boots just looking at them I see a bloody animal being tortured and skinned alive. 🙁

  • Allison says:

Also, what is the point of skinning them alive? I mean if you’re going to do something like this at least don’t allow them to suffer. What is the point?

  • Allison says:

I just found out about this today and I can’t shake the awful thoughts from my head. Is there anything that can be done to put a stop to this? It’s one of the most savage, awful things I have seen. Those poor animals, I can’t understand how people do this.

  • abby says:

Why is all I have to say

  • pat says:

  • Gail Thoreson says:

What can be done to stop this horrific practice? What kind of pressure can be put on these companies to stop this barbaric practice? I only found out about this accidentally. Maybe I’ve had my head in the sand, but there must be others out there like me who need to know what is going on. I have never bought one of these products — and I can assure you I never will after finding out this vital information!!!

  • …its disgusting what humans do to animals…theres no excuse for cruel and barbaric treatment of other living creatures, for any reason…and for fashion and vanity, its a complete disgrace!!!

  • Ilana Easton says:

What can be done to stop this?

  • Ryan says:

That is so messed up like what the f***

  • Kostas says:

For God saying somebody must stop these people doing that crime please!

  • Maisie says:

Will never buy an UGG and warn any one I know! I will never wear fur. Also considering giving up leather handbags for cloth ones. Plastic shoes? Next on list. Barbaric behaviour!

  • Candace says:

    I’m glad I never had a pair

  • ruby says:

this is absolutely horrible! i couldnt even watch the video past 15 seconds!

  • thomas says:

This is not meant to be cruel and I truly believe that what happens to sheep is wrong, but if you would want to forbid this, you would have to forbid almost everything involved with clothing. For example, leather is made out of cow’s skin. Also, eating meat, what almost everyone does, is in fact animal cruelty as well. Many cows, sheep and other animals are mass slaughtered to feed us …

  • Emma OHara says:

I cannot believe how people can still be so barbaric. There seems to be more & more disregard for the animals’ pain. I am sure all people would not want to go thru that themselves so why inflict such cruelty on defenseless animals. I am really sickened. I just found out they skin animals alive for ugg boots. I am totally sickened.

  • Levi says:

Such cruelty ! It’s disgusting they should be placed in prison for these kinds of acts . Sad

  • This is awful!!!! :”””(

  • Maria says:

I am sacred for life!!! Never wearing ugg boots ever again!!! I hope everyone chooses this road or I will be disgusted to look at there shoes!

  • Pauline Henshaw says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop this NOW!!!! I cannot comprehend how anyone can do this to any animal this needs to stop

  • lucifiere says:

I will never purchase a pair of uggs, nor will I ever condone anyone else purchasing them. I was literally sick after watching this video.

  • Shelley says:

I can’t watch, I’m already horrified! Does this nightmare apply to UGG boots, the real ones?

  • Kate M says:

How can these people doing this even REALLY be people/humans? Barbarians! Animals are living breathing beings that FEEL. Just heartbreaking… I will never buy leather or fur goods.

  • gabby says:

Someday God will make a difference in their lives. I am ashamed to call my self an UGG lover and an very appalled by this video and my love for uggs – my heart goes out to those poor creatures!

  • Shelly says:

I had no idea that this went on. I am sickened and appalled. How can a person beat an animal and then take its skin like that? We call ourselves human and would be sickened if someone were to do that to another person. What’s the difference? I do not own any of these boots and will make sure that I do not EVER own any.

  • Linda says:

This is disgusting, and cruel to these poor animals.

  • This world... >_ says:

No words can actually, and accurately explain how much pain that animal has gone through, all we are using it for is it’s fur. There is absolutely NO NEED, AT ALL, WHATSOEVER, to skin that animal, ALIVE. What is wrong with us? I am utterly disgusted to be a Human in this case. Why. In. The. World, would you do that? That’s not even a valid question. IT’S FOR MONEY! No one knows how it feels until it happens to them. No one. All we can do is sit there and boycott this monstrosity. It’s like telling pedophiles and cannibals to go volunteer at an elementary school… Come on, get real.

  • Abby says:

I proudly wore my Emu Australia boots, but now that I know what the animals are put through I don’t know how much more I’ll be wearing them. But I do love my vegan “leather” jacket.

  • Nicole says:

This is so wrong and disturbing . how can you be so evil to something who’s just as Human as we are ! stop animal abuse it’s not fair when we have a voice and they don’t .
