Want to Steal Beyoncé’s Cowboy-Inspired Look While Being Kind to Animals? Here’s How

Published by Rebecca Maness.

A cowboy-style comeback is in full swing—thanks in part to Beyoncé’s album Cowboy Carter—and we’re here for it. What we aren’t here for is leather—because cows are loving, playful individuals who should be left in peace, not killed so that their skin can be used as a fashion statement. There are many better options that are animal-free, so you can get the Western look without harming cows, ostriches, or any other animal.

Leather-Free Western Pants

Vegan leather pants are a great staple for your cowboy closet. For a country music star look, opt for a bootcut or flare-leg pair with pretty details, like embroidered flowers or flame stitching.

If you prefer shorts, there are plenty of options available. Go for a unique pair in a brown cow print, or keep it classic with light-wash cutoffs.

Fringe Everywhere

Fringe detail is a must because it adds movement to your outfit, making it perfect for dancing the two-step with your partner. You can find fringe on everything, from a classic cow-friendly jacket to this showstopping vegan suede cape.

Fringe is also fun on cowboy boots:

Wool- and Leather-Free Cowboy Hats

Of course, your look won’t be complete without a cowboy hat. You’ll want one that’s wool-free or made from vegan leather, because every animal is someone—not something—and shouldn’t be used for clothing.

Vegan Cowboy Boots

There are endless options for leather-free cowboy boots, from custom designs by Kat Mendenhall to the vegan pair worn by Ryan Gosling in Barbie. Whatever style you’re looking for, you can find it at any price point.

Once you’re decked out in your cowboy gear, never ride a horse or go to a rodeo. In nature, horses graze in meadows, play, and socialize with other members of their herd. They have wants, needs, and interests independent from what humans expect of them—and they deserve to live in peace without humans imposing their will on them. You can connect with these sensitive animals and have a meaningful and mutually beneficial relationship with them without climbing onto their backs.

Animals used in rodeos often die for the sake of human entertainment after being zapped with electric “hot shots,” slammed violently onto the ground, or spurred into bucking. Avoid these cruel and dangerous events.
