Tell Russia to End Space Experiments on Monkeys!

Russia's Monkey Space Program Is Behind the Times

Even NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has stopped using monkeys to advance space exploration. Why is Russia doing this? #YearOfTheMonkey

Animals aren't astronauts. Yet Russia is taking a giant step backward for science and ethics by conducting cruel and misguided space-related experiments on monkeys.

There's no reason to repeat the dark days of early space exploration, in which dogs, primates, and other animals died in horrific ways, including in crude experiments or all alone in a tiny spacecraft.

Primates are sensitive and intelligent animals, and they would likely experience extreme distress during the years of tests and training leading up to a possible mission.

Instead of conducting cruel and unnecessary experiments on monkeys, the Russian Federal Space Agency should focus its time and resources on using modern technology, including human simulators that can measure the biological effects of space travel. Additionally, investing in ongoing experiments, tests, and observational analyses of humans at the International Space Station helps expand our knowledge of the effects of space exploration on humans without using animals.

NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Chinese National Space Administration all choose to advance space exploration without using primates. Russia needs to do the same. Please sign our petition to be delivered to the Russian Embassy, urging the Russian Federal Space Agency to end these ill-advised experiments and send the monkeys to a sanctuary instead.

End Space Experiments on Monkeys
Please end space experiments on monkeys, and let them live out the rest of their lives at a sanctuary instead.

Animals aren't astronauts and, unlike human volunteers, cannot give their consent to being the subject of experiments or risking their lives on a mission into the unknown. These intelligent, sensitive primates would suffer immensely during the years of stressful tests and training--as well as during any potential mission into outer space.

Other pioneering space agencies use high-tech 21st-century technology, rather than conducting archaic experiments on primates. We urge you to do the same.
