What: Two PETA supporters will stop foot traffic on Thursday by nursing a life-size cow statue to protest the cruel dairy industry, which forcibly impregnates cows and then takes their babies so that humans can drink their milk instead. Animal advocates will also hold signs proclaiming, “Not Your Mom, Not Your Milk!” and will urge passersby to choose delicious vegan options and leave cow’s milk for the calves.
When: Thursday, August 24, 12 noon
Where: The intersection of Church and Bank streets, Burlington
“Besides traces of blood and pus from cows’ infected udders, every carton of dairy milk contains the hidden ingredient of cruelty,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on kind people everywhere to spare cows a lifetime of suffering by choosing healthy, delicious plant-based milks.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that on dairy farms, mother cows have been heard calling for their calves for days. Male calves are shoved into tiny veal crates, while most female calves endure the same fate as their mothers: They’re forced to produce milk until their bodies give out, and they’re slaughtered for cheap meat when they’re around 4 years old, far short of their natural 25-year life expectancy.
