New Vegan JELL-O Pudding Is Putting Dairy Out to Pasture
The world is ditching dairy, and the proof is in the pudding—literally. JELL-O just debuted a vegan chocolate pudding made with oat milk instead of cow’s milk. The new pudding is a game-changer for the company as its first-ever oat-milk-based product and plant-based pudding cups.
Now hitting shelves at major U.S. retailers, the new Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding is a nod to the original JELL-O flavor from the 1930s—only this time it’s made without milk stolen from mother cows. Instead, JELL-O chose to use oat milk—the fastest-growing vegan milk—to create its signature silky, smooth chocolate pudding.
Why Vegan Pudding?
Today’s conscious consumers want vegan milk instead of cow’s milk. In its announcement, the company indicated that four in five parents are interested in vegan pudding while noting that milk is one of the most common food allergies among children in the U.S.
There’s nothing sweet about pudding made from cow’s milk when you know where the milk comes from. Our fellow animals produce milk for the same reason humans do: to nourish their babies. In the dairy industry, mothers often cry out for days after farmers take their newborn calves away when they are just one day old. Workers repeatedly forcibly manually impregnate cows so that they continue to produce milk, and the cruel cycle continues until their bodies wear out and they are rendered worthless to the industry. Then, they are sent to the slaughterhouse to be killed for their flesh.
Vegan milks, on the other hand, are kind to animals, better for the environment, and are loaded with calcium and other nutrients. JELL-O is one of the many companies taking a sweet step forward by embracing dairy-free desserts.
