  5. The Ultimate Vegan Eating Quiz

The Ultimate Vegan Eating Quiz

Do plants have protein? Is going vegan expensive? Is going vegan hard? If you think you know the answer to these frequently asked questions about being vegan, step right up and try this vegan eating quiz!

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
1. Humans can get protein from plants.
This is TRUE! All plants contain protein. In fact, plant-based food can provide all the nutrients you need and is naturally cholesterol-free, making it a wonderful choice for improving your health. Unlike animal-derived protein sources, plant-based ones contain healthy fiber and complex carbohydrates. Animal-derived foods are often high in artery-clogging cholesterol and saturated fat, and consuming them has been linked to some types of cancer. There’s no need to eat them to maintain good health.
2. Being vegan is only for “health nuts.”
This is FALSE! Although vegan food can be extremely healthy, a vegan lifestyle is not about following a specific diet or having a certain health goal—it’s about not harming animals, including by eating them. To get an overview of the variety of vegan eating styles, look up “whole food plant-based” and “junk food vegan.” You’ll see that everyone can be vegan! If you’re interested in cultivating a healthy vegan diet, we recommend reading The Vegan Starter Kit: Everything You Need to Know About Plant-Based Eating.
3. Is it hard to order vegan food at restaurants?
Nope! Many restaurants have vegan options on the menu or can create a vegan meal for you if you request one. Try www.happycow.net to search for restaurants. You can also find options by googling “vegan options at [insert restaurant]” to see how to order vegan when dining out.
4. Animals who are exploited for food (such as eggs and milk) suffer.
This is TRUE! Animals who are exploited for food suffer greatly throughout their lives and are then slaughtered. Industries try to sell the idea of humane treatment to make consumers feel better about eating animals or otherwise supporting their exploitation—but the only truly humane foods are vegan ones. Learn more about the ways chickens and cows suffer for eggs and dairy at PETA.org.
5. Vegan food is bland and boring.
This is FALSE! Anyone can make or buy delicious animal-free meals. Search for vegan meal ideas online, such as on social media, or check out vegan cookbooks for recipes and other information.
6. There are lots of resources for people who want to go vegan.
This is TRUE! There are books, websites, documentaries, and many more resources about vegan living. You can also seek out other vegans for support: Check out social media to find virtual groups, and search sites like meetup.com. Joining or starting a grassroots animal rights group is a great way to meet like-minded people and win victories for animals at the same time. Encourage everyone you know to get personal one-on-one guidance with PETA’s vegan mentor program: Sign up for a mentor now!
7. Is going vegan hard?
Nope, going vegan is easy! Vegan-friendly menus are sprouting up at restaurants everywhere, and more and more grocery stores are stocking up on delicious dairy-free and meatless products in addition to the vegan staples like pasta, beans, rice, tofu, and veggies that they always carry. Being vegan is especially easy with our huge database of vegan recipes and our free vegan starter kit with tips on making the switch.
8. Going vegan is expensive.
This is FALSE! Eating healthy and vegan is simple on a budget, and over time, the money you save with each trip to the grocery store by swapping out cruelly obtained (and expensive) foods for cheap vegan ones will add up. Some of the most versatile vegan staples—including beans, rice, vegetables, tofu, and pasta—cost relatively little compared to animal-derived foods.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
