Yard Sale Benefiting Animals

Here’s your chance to unclutter your space while making the world a better place!

A cardboard sign with writing on it that says garage sale

Holding a yard sale is a terrific way to tidy up your home, and you can make a difference for animals at the same time by donating the proceeds to PETA.

Gather and price items such as those below and you’ll be ready to get your yard sale started:
  • Appliances
  • Artwork
  • Baby clothes and accessories
  • Bicycles
  • Board games
  • Books, records, CDs, and DVDs
  • Camping supplies
  • Clothing
  • Companion animal supplies
  • Crafts
  • Decorative items
  • Exercise equipment
  • Furniture
  • Jewelry
  • Kitchenware
  • Linens
  • Tools
  • Toys
  • Video games

We’re here to help you unclutter your home and make your yard sale for animals a success! By submitting the form below, you’ll receive PETA’s “Yard Sale Benefiting Animals” kit that includes a sticker with a QR code for making Venmo donations, pictures of animals to represent those you’ll be helping, leaflets, and signs like this one:

Here are some tips for making your yard sale a success.

Collect as many items as you can to sell. Clean out your basement, attic, or closet, and ask friends and neighbors to donate or join you on the day of the sale.

Set the date and location for your yard or garage sale.

Spread the word by doing the following:

  • Hang flyers in public places around town, such as on telephone poles, on community bulletin boards, at your workplace, at your gym, or anywhere else your friends and neighbors will see them.
  • Post about your event online on Yard Sale Search, Craigslist, Garage Sale Finder, Facebook Neighborhoods, Facebook Marketplace, and Nextdoor.
  • Tell your friends about your yard sale and post about it on your social media pages.

Are your items animal-friendly? Don’t sell items that harm animals (e.g., fishing poles and collars that choke dogs) or ones that encourage people to buy animals from pet stores (e.g., fish tanks and bird cages).

Get an early start the day of the sale in order to set everything up and place signs on busy street corners. We recommend that you preprice items using small stickers. You’ll likely have a rush of buyers in the first hour, so be prepared!

Put up pictures of animals (provided in our kit) to represent ones your yard sale will benefit.

Have vegan snacks for sale (or for free), such as vegan doughnuts or homemade cookies like these. Don’t forget to provide a water bowl for passersby out walking dogs.

Engage shoppers! Ask them what they’re looking for and tell them why you’re hosting this fundraiser.

HAVE FUN! Remember: You’re doing more than raising funds for animals. You’re also raising awareness of important issues and showing everyone that every animal is someone.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
