After hearing from PETA, the world’s largest fruit and vegetable producer, Dole Food Company, persuaded the Mayo Clinic to divert funds that the company donates to that institution away from deadly experiments on animals and instead toward superior, human-relevant, and animal-free nutrition research. Previously, a recent experimenter who held the David Murdock/Dole Food Company Chair of Nutrition at Mayo had engaged in numerous crude experiments on animals, including force-feeding mice to induce obesity, forcing rats to swim with a weight tied to their tails, electrocuting mice and rats, and bleeding them to death.
