A dancing “block of tofu” will lead a group of PETA supporters as they pass out free boxes of tofu outside the Zehrs supermarket on Ottawa Street S. on Thursday. As a pandemic linked to confining and killing animals for food continues, the protesters will give away free booklets with recipes such as General Tso’s Tofu and Buffalo Tofu-Scramble Breakfast Tacos, plus tips for preparing tofu, which is cheaper than meat, more versatile, packed with protein, and cholesterol-free.

When:    Thursday, August 27, 6 p.m.

Where:    Zehrs, 750 Ottawa St. S. (near Strasburg Road), Kitchener

“The meat industry breeds killer diseases, and slaughterhouses across the country have failed to protect workers amid the global pandemic,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is spreading the message that preventing the next pandemic can start by choosing tasty vegan treats—and we’re here to help with tips, recipes, and more!”

PETA notes that the novel coronavirus is believed to have originated in a “wet market” in China, where live and dead animals are sold for food. Previous influenza viruses have originated in pigs and chickens—but never in versatile vegan foods like tofu, which can also reduce the risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other life-threatening health issues.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
