Because nonessential businesses are starting to reopen across the state, a PETA supporter dressed as a block of tofu will dance outside a Publix in Atlanta with a sign proclaiming, “Tofu Never Caused a Pandemic!” to urge shoppers to save animals, protect the planet, and prevent the spread of animal-borne pathogens by going vegan.

When:    Thursday, April 30, 12 noon

Where:    Publix, 950 W. Peachtree St. N.W. (at the intersection of Peachtree Place N.E. and Spring Street N.W.), Atlanta

Not only is tofu cheaper than meat, it also is more versatile, is packed with protein, contains zero cholesterol, and can lower one’s risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and numerous other life-threatening health issues. PETA offers a variety of delicious tofu-based recipes on its website, such as General Tso’s Tofu and Buffalo Tofu-Scramble Breakfast Tacos. Tofu, originally imported from China, is now produced all over the United States.

“The meat industry breeds killer diseases, and slaughterhouses across the country have failed to protect workers amid the global pandemic,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is spreading the message that the vegan food supply is strong—and we’re here to help with tips, recipes, and more!”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—notes that the novel coronavirus is believed to have originated in a “wet market” in China, where live and dead animals are sold for food. Previous influenza viruses have originated in pigs and chickens—but never in versatile vegan foods like tofu.

PETA opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
