Kalu was so small when he was taken to Animal Rahat’s Home for Retired Bullocks—a sanctuary in India—that he was delivered in a bicycle basket. The organization’s staff members weren’t given much information about where he came from—they just knew that the little guy was painfully thin and that he needed help.

Kalu wolfed down the food that the staff offered him and was soon playing with some new friends. It didn’t take long for his caretakers to discover how much he loved playing, especially in the water.

The whimsical water buffalo spends his days romping with the bullocks and other animals, soliciting scratches between the horns, and splashing in every body of water around him—even small puddles!

Not all water buffaloes—or donkeys, bulls, or other working animals in India—are as lucky. They are forced to pull heavy loads, denied food and water, used to produce dairy products, and even worked to death. Many end up being killed and skinned for leather. No animal deserves such cruel treatment—please support Animal Rahat and shop cruelty-free.
