The World’s Most Perfect Pup Abandoned at a Gas Station? ‘Beezarre’!

She’s as sweet as can bee and beeautiful, yet still a humble bumble—but despite being, arguably, the perfect dog, this small spaniel mix and her petite sidekick were apparently abandoned at a service station in rural Southwestern Virginia.

Bee and Rachelle
Dumped at a gas station? Clearly, someone was being fuelish.

During a days-long spay/neuter event last month, PETA’s Community Animal Project (CAP) fieldworkers were buzzing around Galax, Virginia, and its surrounding towns. While PETA’s Mobile Clinics Division’s busy bees were fixing 253 dogs and cats, field team members canvassed the area, providing dozens of “backyard dogs” with upgraded doghouses, lightweight tie-outs to replace heavy chains, lots of love, and more. In between these visits, one fieldworker serendipitously found himself needing a potty break, stat. It was at the nearest gas station he could find that a chance encounter took place, giving this adoptable, deserving dog (and her partner) the chance to say “tanks but no tanks” to life on the street.

Fieldworker with Bee
Once in PETA’s care, this dog was buzzing with happiness!

The gas station attendant believed Bee—as fieldworkers later named the black pup—and her pal (PETA eventually named her Rachelle) had been dumped and deserted. They had been hanging around the gas station for hours. The Twin County Humane Society (TCHS), which partnered with PETA to host the spay-a-thon, helped spread the word about the abandoned pair. Days later, with no collars, microchips, or any sign that anyone was looking for them and with TCHS as well as local Animal Control hearing nothing but crickets, Bee and Rachelle were taken to PETA’s Norfolk, Virginia, shelter for a chance at a truly homey hive to call their own. With them were several other former “outdoor dogs,” whose owners had acquiesced to pleas to let us find them loving homes inside.

Bee and Taylor
At PETA’s shelter, Bee and Baylor—two of the 10 rescued dogs PETA is still searching for the perfect homes for—were quick to tell each other, “Let’s bee friends!”

Many of the group have already been adopted or, like Rachelle, lent a helping hand by one of PETA’s trusted partner shelters. And although PETA anticipates being swarmed with Bee adoption inquiries, shelter staff are keen to find the bighearted but sometimes bashful babe the perfect home and adopters.

Adopt This Dog—Help Bee Finally Say, ‘Honey, I’m Home!’

Bee is roughly 5 years old and 25 lbs. Our best guesses include that she’s a mix of spaniel, Australian shepherd, Chihuahua or dachshund, and absolute perfection. (The latter accounts for at least 51%.) Striking the perfect balance between small and medium makes the marvelous mutt’s desires to be equal parts “adventure gal” and “couch potato” all the more practical.
