VICTORY: Lily the Bear Rescued From Roadside Zoo

After spending a decade inside a cramped, barren, and squalid corn crib, a bear named Lily has been rescued following a PETA campaign. She is about 10 years old and has lived—if you can call it that—at the dismal Deer Haven Mini Zoo in Maryland ever since she was transferred there from Virginia’s notorious Natural Bridge Zoo as a cub.

After being barraged with phone calls from concerned PETA supporters, Deer Haven’s owners agreed to retire Lily to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, where she has already been released into a comfortable enclosure that will allow her to acclimate to the new sights, sounds, and smells. Once she gets her bearings (no pun intended), she’ll be released into a larger habitat, where she’ll have acres in which to roam, climb, and explore for the first time in her life.
