Fire Department-Sponsored Festival Prohibits Animal Giveaways

October 2007

After receiving a complaint about goldfish giveaways at the annual community festival sponsored by the Circleville Volunteer Fire Department in North Huntington, Pennsylvania, PETA wrote a letter detailing the cruelty of giving away animals. Chief Hinish agreed to prohibit animal giveaways at future festivals, admitting that animals are not trinkets and that bringing a companion animal into any household should be carefully considered and not done impulsively.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?”

— Ingrid Newkirk, PETA Founder and co-author of Animalkind
