Pigs Safe From Greased-Pig Contests at University of Texas at Arlington

April 2005

In 2003, PETA contacted several fraternities and sororities at the University of Texas at Arlington after learning that the groups jointly held a greased pig contest. As a result, a new bylaw was passed that required approval from the Panhellenic Executive Board for any fraternity-related event using an animal.

In March 2005, a fraternity member contacted us about holding a pig chase and explained that the Panhellenic Council would only allow the event if PETA approved. We explained the inherent cruelty in all events for which animals are involuntary participants, and the fraternity agreed to pursue more humane options for its fundraiser.
