Victory! Tigers Who Suffered at Kirshner Roadside Zoo Now at Sanctuaries After PETA Lawsuit
Following more than a decade of legal advocacy work by PETA exposing the horrific conditions at the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation, four tigers once confined at what we called “The Worst Roadside Zoo in America” have finally been rescued. After Kirshner was forced by California regulators to shut down, the tigers were shuffled to a sham shelter in Kirshner’s network of animal exploiters, where they remained imprisoned in barren cages for over a year. Pressure from PETA’s ongoing Endangered Species Act lawsuit seeking justice for the protected animals who languished at Kirshner apparently led the facility to voluntarily relinquish the tigers. Now the tigers are getting a fresh start at accredited facilities where they will spend the rest of their lives in peace: Sitara will remain with the Oakland Zoo, which coordinated the rescue; Zuri—a white tiger who suffers from vision impairment due to inbreeding—has moved to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas; and J.B. and Franklin are now at the Performing Animal Welfare Society in California.
