FDA, NIH Joint Workshop Echoes PETA Scientists’ High Priority Items
During a joint National Institutes of Health and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) workshop, FDA leadership reiterated that companies should use more non-animal methods and listed immediate actions the FDA can take to make this happen. Among the agency’s high-priority items were those that PETA scientists have advocated for years, including replacing animal testing for medical device contamination and skin irritation with non-animal approaches. PETA scientists also met directly with the head of the FDA to further encourage the agency’s acceptance of non-animal methods and offered strategic guidance on how the FDA can meet its goals.
