Boulder, Colo. – Boulder enjoys several distinctions, including its well-earned reputation for attractive, physically active residents and its perennial ranking among the best college towns in the U.S. Now, you can add “vegan haven” to its attributes. That’s because Boulder has grabbed the number nine spot on PETA’s list of the Top 10 Most Vegan-Friendly Cities, a list kicked off by Paul McCartney, who presented the mayor of Austin, Texas, with the Most Vegan-Friendly City Award in person. Boulder’s many vegan-friendly restaurants, bakeries, bars, and grocery stores helped the city edge out Gainesville, Fla.; Madison, Wis.; Athens, Ga.; Lawrence, Kan.; and other popular college towns.

“Boulder has long been known as a paradise for active people, and nothing keeps your body running like a well-oiled machine more than nutritious vegan foods,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Respecting your health and saving animals’ lives at the same time is a one-two punch that’s hard to beat.”

Boulder has no shortage of hearty vegan options to fill you up after a long day of hiking. Vegans and meat-eaters alike love the customizable pizzas and calzones at Sun Deli & Liquor, which offers mouthwatering toppings such as Daiya cheese, dairy-free pesto, faux chicken breast, and seitan sausage. Other big hits are the unique veggie pancake sauté and hummus pizza at Julia’s Kitchen, and Tsing Tao offers a full menu of Chinese-style dishes made with soy meats, including orange “chicken” and vegan Mongolian beef. For lighter fare, the mushroom-avocado tartar and raw manicotti made from zucchini noodles at Leaf Vegetarian Restaurant are guaranteed to hit the spot.

Rounding out PETA’s Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities list are Los Angeles; Portland, Ore.; New York; Chicago; Seattle; Salt Lake City; Las Vegas; and Richmond, Va.
