Washington - Wearing nothing but a bikini fashioned from strategically placed lettuce leaves, Playboy Playmate Lauren Anderson will hand out tasty, humane, and healthful hot dogs--of the veggie variety--along with free copies of PETA's "Vegetarian Starter Kit." The action, which will take place July 16 on Capitol Hill, marks National Veggie Dog Day--PETA's answer to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council's declaration that July is National Hot Dog Month.
Date: Wednesday, July 16
Time: 12 noon
Place: Rayburn House Office Building courtyard, Independence Avenue entrance
Veggie dogs--which contain roughly a third of the fat and calories that meat hot dogs contain--can shrink your waistline. But PETA's Playmate member and her bikini-clad friends want policymakers to note that veggie dogs can also help shrink your carbon footprint. Researchers at the University of Chicago have found that switching to a vegan diet is more effective at countering global warming than switching from a standard car to a Toyota Prius. A 2006 UN report determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.
"You can fight global warming every time that you throw a veggie dog on the grill," says Anderson. "If people thought about the environmental destruction, cruelty to animals, and unsavory-sounding body parts that go into meat hot dogs, they'd be switching to veggie hot dogs faster than you can say 'inconvenient truth.'"
