Racing to the Grave

This article originally appeared on PETA Prime.

One legal definition of slavery is a civil relationship in which one person has complete control over another’s life, fortune, and liberty. This is the business of thoroughbred horse racing.

In this cruel industry, horses are bought, exploited for monetary gain, and then cast aside when they are no longer useful, often to be sold to slaughterhouses. It’s an industry in which thousands of these beautiful animals are bred and raised each year for the sole purpose of providing entertainment for the public and a return on an “investment” for their owners.

Yearling horses are forced to train when their muscles, bone structure, and joints are vastly underdeveloped. Sometimes they are injected with performance-enhancing drugs, which can result in internal bleeding and ulcers, among other symptoms.

For those horses who make it to the track, many will suffer devastating injuries that require immediate euthanasia. Upward of 900 horses die on the track every year in North America. Horses who make it past the track are often sold to slaughterhouses, and their flesh is used for human consumption or turned into pet food. Moments before death, horses are aware that they are about to be killed. Many times the horses, who are trapped in restraints, will move their heads up and down to prolong their lives for a few more seconds, refusing to look down the barrel of the bolt gun aimed at their heads. These intelligent and beautiful creatures do not deserve this.

Horses in the racing industry are stripped of their life and liberty from birth. They are owned, sold, and forced to perform for the fortune of others. It is outrageous that this type of activity is not only allowed but also glorified as the “sport of kings.” Horse racing has no place in an enlightened society, and this modern-day form of slavery has to end immediately. No sentient being should have their life and liberty taken from them.

Do you have family or friends who attend horse races?

Im happy to say that my family is set in adopting old race horses and they live out the rest of their lives in bliss on the family farms, but we really can stand watching the horse races. But my big boy Midnight is my wonderful stallion (thoroughbredXfriesian) that was sent to the meat works, but we got to him in the nick of time, and he has sired some very nice foals for us for the slow trecks we take them on over the area.

I too cannot watch a horse race. It is very sad to see horses being whipped to make them go faster.

  • Marina says:

I saw footage of how horses transported to Mexico from USA are slaughtered and I was sickened. The person stabs the horse in the spinal chord until it is severed and the horse collapes being paralysed. It takes more than 1 stab to paralyse the horse too. Disgusting!

  • Ann says:

I cannot bear to watch a horse race. What is shown to the public when they win their derby medal is just one small part of a horrible business. When I see their slender lovely legs pounding down the track I feel how easily they could splinter – and they often do ! This is like a disgusting public spectacle of the middle ages. I cannot believe we have not stopped this cruel and savage “sport”.

Es macht mich traurig – diese Gedankenlosigkeit, Herzlosigkeit! Verrohte Menschen die nur auf Geldverdienen aus sind um jeden Preis! Menschen sind schon unglaublich!!!

i cannot watch any of the videos when i started with all organizations they were cutting cats heads off and brathing oxygen into them to see what the effect would be to humans thats been years ago i wont watch them but i will act on them this is not my idea of what a horse or any other animals should have to go through the human raace is so greedy they dont care where there next betting buck comes from or what happens to any animal that may be used for our fixes!!!!!!

Altro infame spettacolo che disonora la dignità dell’uomo!

  • Denise says:

I have an idea lets get these humans who bread and race horses and put them in a field make them jump over fences too wide and too high and whip them when they falter. I am sure horses like a lot of animals love to run around but not like this they are pushed to the limit for greed and mans pleasure. I say this all the time only when humans stop eating animals with they learn to respect them.

    Let’s stop this!

Horses shouldn’t race. The only type of racing that horses should do is when two young foals are schasing each other in a paddock, without the risk of being hurt, abused, neglected or sent to death purely for money. Money does not make the world go around. Its sickening to watch those jockeys hit and beat those horses with those whip-things. I mean, it was a lot worse when they were using the stirrups where it would dig into the horses’ skin, but it’s still disgusting. The only type of riding that humans and horses should be involved in is where the rider is not pressuring the horse and making the experience terrifying for the horse. For example, a horse and rider taking a gentle stroll through the paddock is a good example of riding. Horss are sensitive, gentle, graceful and sociable creatures which are fantastic companion animals and can be great best friends. Even miniature ponies are wonderful. Adopt a horse and help fight against the slaughter industry.

I firmly agree with Cheryl Cowan’s opinion – no one seems to notice the utter grace and beauty of an animal, espescially a horse. Mahatma Ghandi once said “the more defenceless a creature, the more right it has to protection from man by the cruelty of man”. Why can people not understand this? The pet food industry is repugnant and vulgar. This industry basically says “since we can’t kill any of your pets, and since no one seems to mind or care, we will take other animals and slaughter them for your pet’s benefit.” Well, the truth is, people DO care! People HATE it! Be warned pet food industry: there are people who want to shut you down. These people won’t back out of a fight and WILL stop it. These people, are members of PETA. Keep up the fantastic work, PETA!

I HATE HOSE RACING OF ANYKIND!! ALWAYS HAVE SINCE I WAS A CHILD!!
IT NEES TO STOP ONCE AND FOR ALL!! CLOSE DOWN RACE TRACKS EVRYWHERE!! I USED TO GO TO PARTYS THAT FRIENDS WOULD HAVE FOR THE DERBY RACES, AND I WOULD GO IN TO ANTHER ROOM THAT DIDN’T HAVE THE RACE ON AND GO BACK TO THE PARTY WHEN IT WAS OVER!!
I WOULDN’T WATCH THE STUFF BEFORE OR AFTER IT EITHER!! THERE WERE ALWYAS A HANDFUL OF US THAT WOULD DO THAT!!
NOW I DON’T EVEN GO TO THEM TIL AFTER THE HOLE RACE (INCLUDING BEFORE AND AFTER EVENTS!!) IS OVER, THE PARTY WOULD STILL BE GOING ON STRONG!!

this is where our pet food comes from…when it says “meat by broducts” it’s horses & euthanized cats & dogs we’re feeding our poor pets! disgusting industry, the pet food industry.

  • NB says:

Human being makes are the most cruel thing. But on the other hand they can do the beautiful things.I’m living near the last stop place before the horses will send to slaughter.Condition is horrifying and horses are all look so sad and I can feel their despair… It’s really hard for me to drive by that place knowing the fate of those horses. This is all because of greedy human being.
I think this country needs more stiff regulation in that industry and human being should wake up and admit wrong doing !!

  • Cheryl Cowan says:

It seems that people do not see the true beauty of a horse or for that matter any God’s creatures. I can only hope and pray that all this killing and abuse will one day stop. Please stop this torture please see what horses and all animals ever need and this is pure love from mankind. NOT TORTURE OR MURDER.

  • MARTIN says:

this is bloody cruel and it needs to stop now

  • Linda says:

Stop abusing and killing these beautiful horses….this isn’t sport, it’s murder…

  • Hannah says:

Agreed. If one would not do such to a child, one should not do such to an animal, who cannot speak for him or herself.

  • rani chandi says:

This is an extremely cruel sport for horses. They are made to run when they don’t want to and they are whipped into action. Disgusting! It must be stopped.

  • Jess says:

Yes, I encourage the behavior to stop, but unfortunately, I don’t think people are aware of how bad it really is. I wish there was more information out there to convince people and to help stop this terrible sport in its tracks.

  • Lilli Statler says:
