10 Reasons Why My Cat Is My Valentine

Written by Vanessa Cunningham | February 7, 2013

My Valentine’s date this year might be a little shorter than my usual type, and he might be a bit hairier than I normally prefer, but he is very handsome—and I love him! Who’s my hot date this year? My beautiful kitty! I couldn’t ask for a better valentine, and I’ll tell you why. I’m glad my cat is my valentine because:

1. My cat doesn’t judge me for eating all the V-Day vegan chocolates that my mom sent me in one sitting.

2. My cat isn’t allergic to cats.

3. When we cuddle, my cat lets me be the big spoon.

4. My cat makes me laugh.

5. My cat helps me work.

6. My cat is adventurous (I love bad boys!).

7. My cat always protects me.

8. My cat leaves me presents.

9. My cat doesn’t judge me for being a crazy cat lady.

10. My cat loves me for me and doesn’t care if I’m having a bad hair day or am sick or cranky—he loves me all the same!

Cats make great valentines, but they’re also wonderful companions the other 364 days a year. If you’re considering a new feline companion, remember to adopt, not buy!

Richard was my guardian angel. He was my kitty and I his human. His favourite thing to do was come into my room in the morning and press himself against my chest under my arm and just snuggle forever and roll over for me to rub his tummy. He never shunned me when I felt the rest of the world did, and was always there to comfort me. Being a kitty, he never asked questions, just simply lay with me until I felt better. He loved his treats and constantly asked for them but he never bit or clawed. He was my special friend, my angel, which is why he was my Valentine kitty. Because he never let me feel alone.

  • Grandie says:

My Darwin (Hemingway ;)) was rescued from under a trailer where he’d been for 8 days after his mother died. He weighed 7 ounces. His eyes were infected and matted shut and had been surviving on mud. I soaked his little face with a warm wet cloth to get his eyes open and I was the first thing he’d ever seen. He looked up sighed, and just went limp. When I was diagnosed with cancer he laid with me on the bathroom floor for days (during chemo). He became potty trained so he wouldn’t have to get out of my site. When we got through that we relocated to be closer to my fiance and his family. They were as warm and kind to me as a school of barracudas. Darwin was my only friend. My best friend. When the neighbors dog snapped at me Darwin tore after him in a rage..got his ‘thumb’ stuck in that dogs hind end but wasn’t turning loose until the dog was at least 50 yards from me. We’ve been here a year and a half and still the ‘family’ acts like I’m a leper but Darwin thinks I’m the only person in the world. I’ve been diagnosed with MS and am in much pain. Some days I can’t get out of bed..guess what? Darwin doesn’t get out of bed either. He licks his paw and pats my face to comfort me. He has saved my life for many days the only thing that got me up was to make sure he had food and water. He has been my best friend and my family. I thank God every day that he ‘rescued’ me.

I love all animals. Have three dogs and two cats. However, my 17-year-old tabby Millie is not just my pet; she is my friend. She stars in my novel “Children of Bast.” I love her, and I want to think she loves me, which she may because no matter where I am, she is, even if I’m NOT opening a can of her food. And my lap has been her home since she was a kitten. When she goes, I want to go, too.

I have adopted 35 cats in my life, now I live with 19. I love them so much that I cannot imagine my life without them.

    Sorry just to add:

“Killer cats take down billions of birds, report says
Leading human-linked cause of death for birds and mammals”

I find it kinda funny that peta advocates cats. They are heartless killing machines and I love my kitty very much but I know he would eat me if he got the chance.

  • brennan says:

PETA is the worst animal rights advocates ever, they kill more animals than they save.

  • Vicki says:

I love all animals, but cats have my heart. They always get a bad rap, because too many people don’t understand them. I lost my little love, Cupid, to kidney disease. Now I have a little girl, Sadie, who is also sick, but I would do anything for them. They are truley devoted to their Mom or Dad :)

  • Jethro says:

    Dogs are way better.

  • Nimueh says:

At holidays, I play a game where I pretend that I just got – anew – a basket of kittens… just like the cats I have, 7 of them! And I fuss over each cat as if it were a new kitten that I just got in this gift basket! : ) Just so each kitty knows how much I appreciate her or him spending their lives with me… : )

  • Kay says:

Who wouldn’t love the little scrunched up face of a Himalayan, even if her eyes are rarely open wide. Anastasia has slept on my head and patted my face to let me know that she is there for me when I have been ill. I will always be there to love you my little Valentine.

  • GWEN says:

I am a “Cataholic” (cat rescuer).
I currently live with 21 cats, all rescues/adoptees, and I adore them all. A few are semi-feral, most of them are VERY affectionate, but I love them all the same. I also feed two strays outside, that I love to look at, as they are both beautiful creatures. My cats keep me going when nothing else does…They give me much joy, and love, and comfort. I am blessed to share my life with them, and happy to do animal rescue on a volunteer basis. So many animals, that ask only for love and kindness….

I’m really in a deep trouble! Why? I simply have 6 Valentine cats to share my love with! Which one is my most beloved? How can I tell? The only thing I can tell for sure is that all of them bring a smile to my face no matter what and also that all of them have been rescued from bitter lives but they are not bitter at all! Cats are super duper!

  • Lorraine says:

I have a cat and she’s brilliant, I just love her to bits! It’s amazing but she came into my life just over 2 years ago when I was hurting for I’d just put my previous cat to sleep. This one’s so special as she’s a rescued little siamese and when I had her, I was her 4th owner – now she’s settled and happy, my goodness she’s certainly made her mark, my house is now a “home” once again! My dog not only has me as his “best friend” but his “true” best friend is the cat as they simply adore one another – so thank you to those people who didn’t want my cat/my dog because you have given me the best two “rescues” that I could have ever wishes for! Happy Valentine’s Day to my Cat (ps, I’ve also put a message on the dog site my for my dog too!)

  • don says:

Aww! What a nice Valentine message…thanks for taking good care of your furry pals! They’re lucky to have you!

  • JUDE says:

I so love the kitties and cats. I had 9 of them back in 2004 and then my 3 got old and had kidney issues and I had to let 3 go to kitty heaven by 2007 and then in 2011 another one went to kitty heaven, again kidney failure. I am wondering if it is the well water. They are all indoor cats. I have 5 of my cats still and I love them all. They are loving, not judgemental, no arguing or abuse. I just love them all and I miss my others. I have had a total of 16 cats in my lifetime and have kept them all through old age and adopted some as old cats at the pound. Did not do well with the outdoor ones so I do not let cats out anymore as I cried to many tears over a few missing ones. Your story and photos are darling. LOVE CATS.

Totally relatable. However, I am not a crazy cat lady like society would like to make all single women who own more than one cat. I have three and they are my buddies. Love Me, love my cats!

Sim, meus gatos são meus amores!!!

  • Melanie Dieterich says:

This are all very, very good reasons. Here some more: My cat join me, when I am happy, he slick up my tears, when I am sad, he brings me down, when I am angry, he protect me, when I am afraid and he makes nonsense with me, when I am funny. Cats are the most wonderful living beeings and I love my cats so much, that I have no words to discribe it.
