‘Win It’ Wednesday: Kathy Freston’s ‘Veganist’

Kathy Freston is a savvy, stylish, and inspiring New York Times best-selling author and advocate for animals. Freston appeared on Good Morning America today to talk about her newest book, Veganist, which celebrates everything that vegan living offers—and has rocketed to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list. And the two lucky winners of this week’s “Win It” Wednesday contest will also be celebrating when they each score a copy of Veganist.

    I saw you on Oprah..I was feeling very i am going to try vegan….it cant hurt…I love animals, i did not know what I was doing to animals, and myself.

    I have been a vegan since I was 16 years old. As hard as I tried I could not get my husband to stop eating meat, even when I refused to buy it for him. When our daughter was born I wouldn’t feed her that mashed up meat product they pass off as baby food. I caught my husband trying to feed it to her and she refused to eat it. At the time she was 6 months old. He would mix it with vegetables and she was able to separate it from the vegetables and spit it back at him. Unfortunately, when our second daughter was born he was able to feed her meat and she liked it. Luckily my older daughter played the movie “Meet Your Meat” and my younger daughter stopped eating meat that day. The doctors all shake their heads in concern, as if my daughters are malnourished. Then they do there physicals and find them in perfect health always to their surprise. People always ask us stupid questions such as, “What do you eat?” My answer is “Anything we want that isn’t animal based. In fact I probably eat more than you do.” What is wonderful about this is that my family respects our style and has even taken meat out of many dishes and our friends have done the same. Although they state they still eat meat I rarely see them eating it. Being vegan isn’t just about not eating meat but a way of life. Anyone who has seen “The Cove” will understand what I mean. The more we are educated to the exploitation of animals I believe the more people will change their life style. I know the only thing I can do is educate those around me and hope they will do the same. So far it is working.

    I’m 25. I’ve been vegetarian for over half my life and have been striving toward veganism since this summer. I have been slowly using up non-vegan foods from my vegetarian days–fish sauce and buttermilk powder can really last a long time! I can only afford store-bought vegan cheese as a sometimes treat (and also want to avoid the brands that have a lot of additives or are made with soy), so I’ve been working on recipes for making my own vegan cheese. Right now I have a loaf of homemade cheddar-esque in my fridge which makes for a pretty mean grilled cheese sandwich. When I come up with a convincing substitute for blue cheese, I’ll be thrilled. I have loved cooking for as long as I remember and so I’ve checked out scads of cookbooks from local libraries for vegan (or vegan adaptable) recipes. I think my biggest triumphs are when I hear from a non-vegan that they think something I cooked (that’s vegan) is tasty. I believe that food prepared mindfully and shared joyfully is the best way to enjoy and promote a more ethical lifestyle.

    I have wrote a whole esay to my class about not eating meat and also why marine mammals should not be held in captivity. I am 11 years old I figured about peta 5 months ago. As soon as I read the article meet your meet I instantly became vegan. I also think people are so dumb when they are trying to lose weight or trying to prevant strokes. STOP EATING MEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    My 1st job ever was offloading and re-loading frozen chicken from trailer to trailer. By the end of the day (and usually covered in chicken bits) I was ready to burst into tears when I’d see a piece of chicken on the table. That’s what prompted me to (quit my job and) lean towards a vegan lifestyle. Trust me being Latin American it was difficult, but ultimately a life chnaging choice. Now my (boundless – Thankyouverymuch!) energy is spent trying to convince my family to put down the pig’s feet and try to go meatless at the very least once a week. I belive any change should begin in the home..right on the stove. 😀

    I have been a vegetarian for 2 years now and I’m now leaning on a totally vegan living. I though it would be really hard at first, but I’m taking it one step at a time. Discovering the vegan lifestyle and learning about animal issues actually changed my life. So much that I’ve decided to make a career out of it and become an ethicist specialized in animal rights! Now, every day, I’m trying to live up to my personnal commitments to animals.

    I’ve been vegetarian now for 21 years. Vegan for only 3 months, and I fell fabulous. this book inspired me some much. It’s full of live saving information. this book, however,is not a cookbook. A few posts have mentioned that want new recipes. While this book is truly inspirational, there aren’t any recipes. thought you should know.

    I’ve been Vegetarian for two years. I got rid of all my animal skin clothing months ago, and this month, particularly this week, I’ve decided to try and turn at least three of my favorite dishes (Three is just my goal number) Vegan. It should be so much fun, I really can’t wait!

    Two words: Skinny Bitch! A friend told me to read this book and stay close to the bathroom….I was like “Yeah right!” Well, I made the mistake of reading it at work. As disgusted as I was by all of the poisons and chemicals that end up in meat and dairy, it wasn’t until I got to chapter 6 that I actually sprinted into the office bathroom and barfed an entire days worth meat and dairy out of my life! The testimonials of the slaughterhouse workers was enough to make me physically ill at the thought of what really goes on in the meat industry. How cruel and evil these people are, I don’t know how they can sleep at night. Anyway, I went to the store the next day and told myself that I was still going to eat fish. Well, that didn’t last long. I went over to the seafood counter, looked at the salmon carcasses, and found myself head first in a garbage can, spilling my guts, once again! Reading that book was a more of a mountain climb than a stepping stone. It made me physically and emotionally unable to consume animal products, because every time i thought about doing so, I would have horrific images flash through my brain. I am so grateful for my new lifestyle. I have more energy, my skin is clearing up, I lost 10 pounds in two weeks, and my conscience is clean :o) it has an all around great effect! The only thing I need are a few directions. I’m not sure how to REALLY cook vegan, but I am so anxious to learn, because I LOVE food and know that there are more menu options, I just need to get my hands on them!

    My mum is a vegetarian and hence I and my brother are vegetarian since we were born. besides I strictly oppose wearing leather and fur. all animal products are sort of banned at my home…..
