Warning: Images of Burned Bodies

Written by PETA | September 3, 2009

In July, thousands of pigs lost their lives when a factory farm in Alberta, Canada, was ravaged by fire. Our friends at Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals (CETFA) obtained photos of the aftermath, which show that before succumbing to smoke inhalation, the panicked pigs frantically trampled each another in a futile attempt to escape.

Factory farm fire

Pregnant sows, trapped in gestation crates, tried desperately to jump out of their stalls or squeeze through the bars. Instead, they died in their cramped prisons. Many of them suffered from ruptured bellies, and their unborn piglets were killed.

Factory farm fire

On poorly regulated factory farms, where so many animals are crammed together in confined spaces, fires are all too common, and they cause the horrible deaths of thousands of animals.

Please head over to CETFA’s Web site right now and support that organization’s initiative to prevent the deaths of animals in factory farm fires.

tsktsk… it’s God’s will… so that people may learn that pigs are not to be eaten!

i am one of the greatest lover of animals .i strongly condemn the way they are keeping the animals.its a shame on humanity .i want to bring some revolution. so help me out ..

  • Ashley says:

Edward and Kurt K My husband works in a hog barn in MB so I know that many barn owners do burn down their own barn. The insurance on the barn is worth far more then the hogs inside. The cost of feed meds etc to get the hogs to market weight almost surpasses the amount that the hogs would bring in market.

  • Kurt K says:

Edward I understand what you are trying to say. However since you and I are incapable of “independent” thought ours doesn’t count. I understand what Vegancoin is saying as well. I don’t think Edward was trying to suggest any negative he was just pointing out the fact that pig farmers would never intentionally burn their own barns. That would be very counter productive to their income. But what do I know? Edward and I are the only two on this board that thinks that. Everybody else think along the same lines how independent.

  • vegancoin says:

edward your contrived speciesist doubletalk is shameful bogus and unfortunate. it was no accident that these intelligent sentient beings were locked into a lifetime of brutal torture and sadistic cruelty they spent their entires lifes on a factory farm treated only as mere commodities or production units. you obviously are an uncompassionate person incapable of independent though willfully oblivious to obvious cases of sadistic cruelty such as this.

  • Edward says:

Those fires must be accidental. If they don’t care about the pigs then they would at least care about the money that the pigs would bring them. To them burning pigs is like burning money. SusanT you are too mad to consider things in a rational state of mind. Burning down barns for no reason is like driving into trees for no reason.

  • Tina says:

I think therefore I dont eat meat. I have a conscience therefore I dont eat meat. I believe in Karma therefore I do not eat meat. I love animals therefore why would I eat them?

  • vegancoin says:

the harsh sadistic cruelty of factory farming the brutal treatment and inhumane slaughter of innocent sentient beings is no accident. you are a mindless apologist and a fool sloth. you are merely recitingmindlessly regurgitating dull onedimensional speciesist rhetoric when you make such foolish crass uninformed and sweeping generalizations.

  • SusanT says:

Accidental? Oh you betall of the fires that have occurred since early 2008 that cruelly incinerated more than 80000 helpless trapped pigs have been “accidental”. Here’s the link describing the heartbreaking numbers of fires httpwww.cetfa.comimagesstoriesStoptheLiveBurningsformatted.pdf You are a blind fool Sloth. If you can’t see the senseless and unconscionable cruelty of keeping these animals intensely confined to where they don’t even stand a chance of escaping if a fire “accidently” occurs then you are truly hopeless. Only the most callous insensitive excuse for a human being could offer the pathetic idea that these fires are accidental. Take a moment and imagine being locked in a steel cage in a large barn filled with ammonialaden air and dust then imagine the panic you’d feel when smoke and flames erupt and you know there’s no escape. “Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight”. This is so medieval it makes me want to cry. Seeing those poor pigs trampled and burnt and the pigglets that were killed before they could even be born still in their moms it’s not fair. I honestly can only think of one species that is so heartless that they allow this madnesshumans! But it makes me an even more proud canadian to know that it was a canadian assoctation that posted these pictures and informed people about the cruel things that happen behind our backs!

  • wendy cowan says:

What can i say this sickened me i am a veggie and i can’t understand why people who watch this barbaric cruelty could eat any kind of meat.I cannot put into words what i would do to these bastards who enjoy inflicting pain to defensless animals but i would enjoy very very much doing the same to them and if i was allowed to i would.Would love to hear them sceam in pain pull them apart limb by limb stand on them and cut there private parts off.Does this sound sick oh no because this is what humanssick basrards who get off on this creulty

  • Debbie says:

People think nothing of being cruel to animals. They figure they are destined to die anyway. Animals feel like we do and I hate it when people say “But they aren’t humans” Duh.

  • Paul says:

Humans never fail to shock and disgust me.Humansnever grow up do they? With their massive egos and childish waysso superior to everything elsethey think?Ive learnt many what you would think strange truths over the years.I died in surgert in November 2006 and was told some real truths of life by Jesus and the Tibetan Buddha Milarepa. We pay for everything when we diethere are countless hell realms humans cannot even comprehend where each second in their time can last a billion years of pain.I really hope and pray the last prediction of Nostradamus comes true of the world ending in 3797.Humanity will be destroyed because of the countless sins and evil theyve committed. All of Nostradamuss predictions have come true.Humans are already cursed in this universe of infinity by their own actionsall is repititionno one sees or wants the truth that could save them and all sentienent beings. This world of humans is already finishedall is illusion.

  • THe_Sloth says:

you all realize this was probably an accidental fire right?

  • rebecca JONES says:

Thank you Peta for exposing these horrific crimes. We all have to fight for these innocent creatures. Rebecca

  • Myrna Juarez says:

BASTARDS!!!!! they will pay! I guarantee it! they too will die a painful death no doubt!

  • Catherine Walker says:

This is a prime example of human greed cruelty neglect and disrespect towards animals. Those poor creatures what they have endured and what they continue to endure just breaks my heart….

  • Brien Comerford says:

Thank God for animal sanctuaries such as “Pigs Peace Sanctuary” ” PIGS” and the “Ironwood Pig Sanctaury” that take care of hundreds of intelligent pigs and piglets.

  • Brittany says:

That is so sad. It is an absolute crime what animals have to suffer these days. Slaughter house workers need to realize that just because animals cannot speak doesn’t mean they don’t feel the pain inflicted upon them. All I can say is what goes around comes around.

  • vegancoin says:

god that is insanely sadistic and horrible. those poor animals. those animals suffered a horrible fate only because of human greed cruelty neglect and careless widespread apathy.

  • judith basye says:

This is no way for an animal to be kept. In crates so small the pigs can’t even turn over. After seeing this I will never eat pork again. You just made a vegetarian out of me.You should be ashamed of making an animal live like this when it gives YOU so much. Then to think they burned to deaththat’s just plain torture.

  • Shari says:

Thank you PETA for showing this! It tells the truth about the pain and suffering they endure. Maybe people will think about this at their next B.B.Q. I know all to well about factory farming. I used to pick up at the meat processing plants when I was a truck driver. This is why I became a vegetarian! And a proud PETA member!

  • AAG says:

This is such a horror on so many levels!!!! Go vegan it is a moral imperative!

  • Lily says:

    When will people learn?

  • Kaitlin brough says:

    This is horrible!!!!

  • Yuri says:

How sad!!! I feel bad for all these innocent animals that had to suffer till the end. My heart is with them and may they find peace in heaven and GOD punish the people that put them through such horrific experience. We have got to put an end to all animal cruelty. People just can’t take for granted animals lives. They’re worthy too and deserve to be loved and respected.

    don’t know wat to say. . . .

  • Ellie says:

I cant beleve what’s happened i am vegan and those small gesteration crates make me want to cry i want it to STOP MAKE IT STOP PLEASE! One good thing about this is at least they’re out of their misery now!

  • Aneliese says:

I am so glad that I now know of the CETFA I’m Canadian.

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

This really hit home for me because we have several large brushfires burning in Southern California right now in La Canada. A lot of people keep horses and other farm animals out there and the shelters have been scrambling to accomodate them all. Seeing this also gave me the final push I needed to give up pork I already stopped eating beef.

  • Susan T says:

Those responsible for the horrific deaths of these animals need to be brought to justice. I have a strong suspicion that unscrupulous most are of course! farmers deliberately torched their barns because of the drop in pork prices. One farmer was even quoted in a local newspaper saying that he’d be better off if the barn just burned down. It’s not enough that these poor animals suffer from intense confinementbecause of greed they are then burned to death! My God what is happening to mankind? Anyone who would deliberately inflict the kind of pain terror and suffering that dying in a fire brings to any living being should be either committed to a jail cell for the rest of their miserable lives or executed. They are not humanthey are monsters!! May those precious pitiful creatures be at peace now never to be harmed again. I curse humanity!!!
