Tiny Dog Saved From Hell House

Written by Michelle Kretzer | July 21, 2011

This sweet’s dog owners may have tossed her a bit of food, but that is where their kindness stopped. Neglected and relegated to life at the end of a chain, this tiny Chihuahua mix suffered every day and night without shelter from whatever the weather threw at her. Her fur was painfully matted and she seemed desperate for a kind word or touch.

A neighbor, desperate to help the dog, called PETA for help. We got on the blower and reported this wanton neglect to the local humane society and law enforcement officials, who both paid visits to the house. The pressure worked, and her owners put up a sign advertising a free dog.

Our complainant arranged for a friend to go by, and the owners handed the dog over without a second thought. Her sentence in chains was over. Our complainant’s friend insisted on picking up the tab for a good grooming for the dog and a much-needed visit to the vet. When she found out that the little dog was infected with heartworms, which would have been fatal, she knew she would foster the dog until treatment was complete. Now this little miss is reveling in the love of her foster mom and the cozy indoor life that she deserves and, who knows, foster homes have a way of becoming permanent ones.

No dog deserves a life on a chain. Please read PETA’s advice on how to help a chained dog in your neighborhood.

I just can’t understand why people choose to get a dog and not take care of them. It’s such a sad story that I keep hearing. This is such a beautiful little dog and it’s hard to read that anybody can truly be so stupid

OMG! She looks like a muppet. I love her. I love her smile and her eyes full of love! So cute!

  • Just Sayin' says:

“Hell House” is a bit dramatic don’t you think? It’s the overly dramatized headlines like this that make people think PETA overreacts and leads them to ignore the real abuse.

I love a story with a happy ending. However, it upsets me that there are no consequences to offenders. There will be no change until these people have to pay for their actions.

  • Aneliese says:

But what about the owners? Will they be charged with neglect or cruelty? What keeps this from happening again?

She’s so cute. I saw a very tiny dog chained to a tree. It’s illegal where I live to chain a dog for more than 3 hours. So I called the Humane Society and they said, “it’s very difficult to prosecute those cases.” So they weren’t interested in my info because they didn’t want to have to deal with checking if it’s longer than 3 hours. It really depends on the individuals working at each humane society/animal control department whether laws will be enforced. I drove by a couple of more times weeks apart and didn’t see the dog chained so I just let it go. Although, I know we could call PETA for help if local authorities won’t help.
