PETA Supports Breastfeeding Moms

Written by Michelle Kretzer | November 22, 2011

After Michigan mom Natalie Hegedus was verbally reprimanded by a judge for discreetly breastfeeding her child in the back of a courtroom, PETA jumped to the support of Hegedus and other moms by seeking to place our pro-breastfeeding billboard near the Paw Paw courtroom where the mammary melee occurred.

Breastfeeding is natural—stealing milk from cows so that we can feed our babies the milk nature intended for calves is not. The consumption of cow’s milk has been linked to asthma, constipation, recurrent ear infections, anemia, diabetes, zits, and even cancer in children.

Human mothers who opt to feed their children breast milk should be commended, not censured. Women should be encouraged to give their children the healthiest possible food and leave cow’s milk for calves.

I agree that breast is best, and I nursed both my oldest kids well past the recommended age gladly. But there are non-dairy options for formula. I was one of the small percentage that couldn’t breast feed for my youngest, due to cancer treatments, and I was incredibly grateful for having that option. So I hate that the message seems to infer that there are only two choices; the breast or dairy.

There is only one problem with living in modern times: most of us have become totally out of touch with everything that should be a natural part of life such as birth, death, and yest, breastfeeding our children instead of popping a bottle or a pacifier into their mouths. The medical care and vaccines available now are wonderful but there are somethings we are just too isolated from that should be just a familiar part of life.
